Extra Lights
#1
Hey: Guys
I bought a set of 55 watt driving lights and was going to hook them up for better night ridding for the MLK weekend at Glamis. I was thinking of hooking them directly to the battery and operating them with a extra switch because I remember something about the stock system not being able to handle this type of draw, on a 2000 DS.
Any idea or suggestions.

When they talk about not being able to handle the draw it doesn't matter where you hook them up. It will drain the battery because the charging system won't be able to supply the juice to the lights and recharge the battery from starting the quad. That is what they say, but I switched my baja lights to 55watts and the stock headlight is 55 watts and I have never had a problem with the system not keeping up. I don't let it idle a lot and try not to kill it a lot. Keep in mind that I don't ride at night for more than an hour or so at a time.

I mounted 2-50W lazer star lights on my brush gaurds and ran all the wiring from the battery and put in a switch and have never had any problems with it running all stock plus the two extra lights. I checked the manual and it is a 290 watt system and I'm using about 260-270 when all the lights are on and I do a lot of night riding.

I put a set of 50w laser stars on that work real well for pointing light where you aim the handlebars.
I used a relay that will only turn the 50 watters on when I hit the high beams, kinda nice not to have to mount a switch and alot easier to operate that way. Its simple to wire and I can explain if anybody wants to this setup.
If you do install extra lights it is best to take your power source (or common) directly from the battery. 100watts = 7.7 amps, that is too much for the factory wiring to handle and it could damage it.
