Default High dollar shocks?

The king shocks require custom a-arms and swing arm to accommodate their size. Jeffroe has them on his quad. Check out So Cal Fab Shop

Looks like it would take some serious bling bling to have So Cal Fab set up your quad. Very nice ATVs they have though.

Sandaholic is right ,The King shocks are the best in the desert ! Kings phone # is 714-530-8701, talk to Mike. I have a lot of experience building and driving desert race trucks and there setups, setting up a shock to work properly is very time consuming, you first need a high quality shock ( stay away from sway a way, terrible customer service!!!) that has multiple adjustments for spring and damping, multiple spring rates are the best ! Your weight , machine weight and unsprung weight all need consideration and then there is your riding style and preference, dont get overwelmed by all this because there isnt any thing you cant learn how to do, after all who made who ? Find a local racer or shop and play with your valving, make sure your springs are correct for your weight, to soft is better than to hard since you can sometime control it by firming up the valving, you want to make sure you are using all of your travel to, if there to stiff you cant use all the travel and whats the use of having longer shocks if there not used ? If you want to change the valving and you think they are to soft or stiff, go several steps in the direction you think you need to go, if it verifies your thinking then slowly go back the other direction, kind of like jetting a carb. In desert racing suspension is everything ! If you have less power and more travel you will go faster because you have more control and dont have to slow down for bumps and you are less fatigued ! I know its a lot of work but if you have good shocks there is no reason you cant get the ride you want, I have rarely seen anyone bolt on a set of shocks and have them set right of the bench, sorry for blabbering, if you have any questions just mail me. We must go faster !

Thanks for the great replies sandaholic, & sherminator. I know what you mean by it taking a long time to dial in a suspension, it seems like I am always tweaking something trying to make things work better. Problem is, there is no local shop that can change the valving on these shocks, so if any internal changes are made I have to send the shocks all the way back to the manufacturer, which gets expensive when you are shipping to Canada and back. I also found it interesting that GLWBEAR said the Elka elites needed frequent fluid changes to stay in top form, because I had noticed that they worked a whole lot better when new than they did after half a season racing on them. I suspect I needed to change the fluid in those shocks.

So do you guys really think that shocks with multiple rate springs are better than perhaps a dual rate shock, especially if one of the dual rate springs is also a progressively wound spring? That whole triple rate vs quad rate deal just seems like a big sales gimmick to me, and that Elka is the king of gimmicks with their "titanium plated" shock shafts, and "quad rate" springs. Too bad they did not keep working for more than half a season.

Default High dollar shocks?

been running the kings for a year now and i really like them. sure i have had to send them back twice (once for revalving and once for a lighter spring) but i think mine was one of the first to have them. here's a story to help make my point. last trip to little sahara me and my brother-in-law ( he rides a stock ds) were shooting off the top of a great dune back to back. first we went off in 2nd then 3rd and when our brass b*lls allowed then 4th. after about 8-10 times he stopped and was shaking his hand, he said that was it,he was done. the jar of the landings were getting just to much for him. in the past when mine was stock i to felt the landings after awhile and had to stop. not with kings soft smooth and quite these shocks made me think i had alot more confidence than ever befor!! 16" of travel and 2" longer swing arm smoothed out even the roughest dunes and trails. so i feel i did get what i paid for and then some. click on my camera for pic's.

Outerlimit: Amen to the sales pitch... All the companies are doing it... as for quadruple rates.. only a Preloaded shock could actually be Quad rate with four springs... all Zero preloads need a small helper spring just to keep a small amount of pressure on the shock when extended to keep it together, not loose.. the spring is closed out with any weight on the shock...... But companies( ELKA was the first) have been selling them as Quadruple rate shocks....A non zero preload shock with 4 springs could very well be a full Quadruple rate setup, as the first helper spring would not be closed out with weight of vehicle and rider alone.

Ohh yeah.. and i run TCS shocks all round and love them.. My guess is your just expecting too much from them... my shocks handle the whoops awsome.. and dont bottom out ever!, even when dropped off 10ft ledge jump..... If they give you a better than stock ride over the small stuff..AND.. Dont bottom out.. thats all you can ask, and thats worlds better than stock!
