Default High dollar shocks?

Jeffroe is my hero !!! SIXTEEN INCHES OF SUSPENSION TRAVEL I'm not sure I want the +1 a-arms on the super tight technical motorcycle race courses we run, but that much suspension travel would sure soak up the rough stuff. Dare I ask? how much $ for the shocks, a-arms, and swingarm all put together? I'm guessing about $4K.

Here is what I found out on the King shocks after talking to So Cal Fab today. The King front shocks need a +1 a-arm because the piggyback reservoir hits the upper a-arm at full compression travel. So why don't they use a shock with a remote reservoir, then you would not need new front a-arms? But with the new front a-arms you will have 14 1/2" of suspension travel with the King shocks. Ride height is the same as stock because extended length of the King shocks is the same as the stock shock, but collapsed length is less, which is where you get the extra suspension travel. The front shocks and front a-arms, with new brake lines and tie rods, cost $2650. The King rear shock bolts right up to the stock swingarm (although they have not tried an '04 swingarm yet). The rear shock cost $650, and will give you 13.5" of suspension travel.

So for $3300 you can have a DS with 14" of suspension travel, riding on King racing shocks.

I do NOT like the extra width of the +1 a-arms though, so does anyone know of front wheels for a DS 650 that have a 4+1 offset instead of the typical 3+2 offset?

Wow, The King shocks are sounding better all the time. Last I heard they made the ATV 3" taller, now it's stock height which would be very do-able. If the rear is $650 and fits the stock swingarm, that could be an easy first step. +1 wider would suck for MX, but for Sand Dunes or the other trails I ride I can't think of a reason it would be bad.

Did you ask them about using a remote res insteast of a piggyback?

For the front wheels, in another thread 3TV was looking for wheels with a different offset - it was suggested he contact Mr Horsepower about his re-worked hubs which are lighter and allow for the use of Honda Rims. If that would work for you, perhaps you could find some Honda rims that would fit? Then you wouldn't have to look for DS rims..

Just checked out the hubs from Mr. HP, and they do indeed change the bolt pattern to the Honda 4/144 front and 4/110 rear bolt patterns. I e-mailed him to see if they change the offset any at all. If they do not change the offset then the following DS set up would be possible:

King Racing front shocks with So Cal Fab +1 a-arms = 14.5" suspension travel
King Racing rear shock = 13.5" suspension travel
Mr HP hubs
HiPer carbon fiber wheels with 4/144 bolt pattern with 4+1 offset in front, and 4/110 bolt patter with 5+5 offset in back.

That would give you a DS that is stock width, stock length, less unsprung weight, and has 14" of suspension travel on average.

Kinda expensive though

I don't know if the King shocks are zero preload or not. Both front and rear shocks are dual rate.

I also do not know if the 4+1 offset wheels would even fit the So Cal Fab a-arms or not. If the 4+1 wheels would not work then you would be left with a DS that is too wide for the type of racing I do.

Plus, by the time you add up the cost of the suspension, hubs, wheels, and tires, you are within a few hundred dollars of the price I paid for the whole ATV. Those King shocks would sure be trick, and I still may go that route, but a more practical approach would be to just go with the Ohlins shocks I had been thinking of when I started this thread.

[edit] I do not know for sure the cost of the hubs. I am at work and I e-mailed Mr HP from my home computer this morning, so I wont be able to read his reply for another six hours or so. It says $150 for the rear hubs on his web page, but I do not know if that is for one hub or two, or whether the front hubs are the same price or not.
