the fan is a odd subject it will work and then stop the problem seemed to be they were to ridge of a mount and they would vibrate the wire inside loose. i've mounted mine with only two of the 4 bolts and now it runs all the time i've actually wired mine to a switch to turn it on when i want, but that is mainly for when i'm racing. seems there was a couple other recalls but nothing major the oil filter is one thing i would change the 01 went to a longer one and the change is just a new cover that is longer.

If you don't mind spending a little money, changing upper A-arms will dramatically improve handling and get rid of the "twitchiness" or need for a steering damper. Some of the front shocks were overly stiff, but some were okay. The DS has had small but significant changes over the years. I'm on my third DS, I could have skipped the second, an '02 Baja, but I really like my new X. My '01 was great, but it needed the a-arms, shocks, fan.
What was the deal about the early models needing to have the oil pump primed after changing oil?

when you change the oil you will have to bleed it, the screw is in there very tight, get the biggest screwdriver you got, maybe one with a square shank.
Check the toe , many were set wrong from the dealer, I think it should be around neutral to 1/8 toe out.
Unless you are running moto cross, if you get new tires, get 22" rear and 23" front, the 23"front helps keep the front end stable, cuts out some of the twitch at high speeds.

My advice is to take one thing at a time. Even with the things everyone has listed its still the best quad out there to me.
1. Get an air filter
2. Roller
3. Longer oil filter and cover
4. CDI
5. Tires
You will find that there is always something to upgrade. The Forums are a great place to get ideas from people who have done them. The forum guys have helped me alot. Ron Woods racing has helped me alot along with Alba also. No question is a dumb question.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR QUAD I THINK YOULL LOVE IT.
