Default Best exhaust w/o internal mods?

satellitemike-I also have a 2003 baja that is stock internally but i have put a k&n air filter on and re jetted(170) and i have a big gun cdi.I am going to be taking my baja to the dunes sunday to check my jetting and to see how much of an improvement i made without a pipe and i can give a good evaluation then so i will post a opinion as soon as i get back.I have taken my baja out once already with just the big gun cdi and with just the cdi i can tell quite a difference so i suspect that as long as my jetting is right i should have made some pretty significant gains.

duneittilludie- sounds like you like the cdi, what does it go for, and is it adjustable? Did your quad have that flat spot in it at about 3000rpm, and did the cdi correct or minimize it? I will most likely go with the big gun race system with jetting and buy the quite core, and add the k&n filter. After I get this stuff done I will make another post to let you know.

satellitemike-Yes i did have the dip in the power at a mid level in the rpms which was at about 3000 to 3500 but at least in my case the cdi alone got rid of that problem.I am using the big gun cdi and it does not have adjustable rev limits but it seems to work very well where it is set now.

satellitemike-I tried the new jetting-air filter-cdi combination today and the results were much better than i expected.I went with a 170 main jet since it performed very well and i removed the air box lid completely since i am using an outerwears and that combined with the cdi gave me about two quads lengths gain in a 300 foot sand drag as opposed to where i was stock. The simple mods that i did without a pipe resulted in one of the biggest performance gains that i have ever made with out internal mods so i can highly recommend doing what i did.

bartlettracing- Why do you suggest that i run with the lid as opposed to running without?I tried running with the lid today and it did not run anywhere as good as without .

countryjoeglass&bartlettracing-I am more than willing to accept advice if it is based on sound reasoning so i would like to hear your opinion as to why when running the stock carb i need to keep the lid on.

The number 1 reason is that your stock carb is a constant velocity carb. It REQUIRES a vacuum in the airbox and correct pressure to properly open the slide to raise the needle. Your throstle ONLY opens the bore valve in the carb. If you remove your lid you then remove your vacuum causing throttle response problems. Guys that have run with no lid NEED to reroute your vacuum slide intake to a custom mounted intake on your snorkel tube to keep the vacuum. Your best bet, KEEP THE LID ON. You want to make a change, for get any jet kit and such, just get a carb...

MUDSTUD-What you say seems to make sense but when i ran with the lid on that is when i experienced throttle response problems. So am i to understand that as long as i am getting good crisp throttle response at all rpm levels that i am okay?I only jetted up to a 170 from a 165 which is the stock size so i dont think it is a matter of being too rich.I gained a large amount of performance and throttle response when i re jetted and removed the lid so why is it working for me?.If anyone else is running the stock carb without the lid i would like to hear your results.
