mystereid,
there is a guy up here in the portland area that is doing machine work to lighten wheels. he cnc's a nice design at the same time. he has a couple of different designs. mainly has wheels allready made for banshee's. but he said he would do ds wheels. I think his web site has been mentioned on here before. direct drive or something like that.anyway, this is his number. 503-658-7600

he is defenitly semi partial to ds's. everything he does is for banshees. swingarms, wheels, clutch lockouts. he also is a klotz oil dealer. thats how I now him. he gets my oil for me. he is on the dunes all the time with a enclosed trailer that says "get hooked up" and "direct drive" on the side. I am not sure if he is related to d & d recreation. he does good cnc work though. and said that he would cut wheels for ds's. he just does not want to do much with ds's. to much r&d involved.

i have the new sprocket star or hub not on yet, but looking forward to getting it on, the new 04 upper a-arms are lighter than the old stock ones by far, plan on new joints if you do this though. you might try 3 bolts in the rear sprocket, stock and three alum.

Thanks for the replies. I know people have posted wondering about the effect of the rotating mass and its relationship to the distance from center. While it would be nice to lighten the axle, I think the greatest effect is to lighten the things that are furthest from center, Tires then wheels then sprocket and so on. It seems to come down to tire choice being very important.
Sandman, I think you were running smooth buff fronts, how are they for severe sidehilling and general riding?

Do the STU padla brats comp cut hook as good as the extremes?

I felt that the STUs didn't hook up as well, 9 paddle for 9 paddle. The difference is negligible, probably less than 10%. I lost 1/4 bike length in the holeshot but gained a bike due to acceleration. I noticed it took a little more throttle to pull wheelies in the dry sand. The STUs climb steep hills better though and are less likely to dig holes, making it the better play tire if you are in to the steep faces.
