The Baja x is a good way to go with the standard skid plates, The baja is also good, and you could add better protection to the bottom with the money you would save over the X! The standard ds650 is OK but Needs a little work to make it a decent desert quad.

We have mountain trails up here, maybe not as tight as back east, but Sportsmans and Suzukis are not as narrow as Hondas and Yamahas, and the DS manuevers through these tight trails as well as anything.
I am amazed at where my X will go. It is very manueverable.
I had a stock '01 DS, an '02 Baja, and now the X. AT first the shorter swingarm took a little getting used to. The increased weight transfer had me pushing in a few turns, and lofting the front wheel unexpectedly.
Now that I am used to it I ride accordingly, shifting my weight forward and to the inside on slow turns, and using the lighter front end to take jumps more comfortably, and faster.
The X is a huge improvement over the previous DS. And it looks so much better.

Meanwhile, the Trail Boss is one of the best wife/kid rides around. It handles great, very light steering, not top heavy, slides well, has plenty of zip and has a fun quotient few quads can match. Excellent choice.

Rally is okay. Ozark is a much better machine, but has shifter with auto clutch.

Seems perfect for you.. You sound like you will hold your own on this machine.. dont go crazy when you get the machine. Alway wear a helmet, chest guard, gloves and boots... Have fun with your new rides.. For the 2 girls i would recomend a z250/ 250ex.. what ever you find cheaper. They will dow what ever you want in the trials and in the dunes. Great beginner atv's for younger riders. Good luck and happy riding

It is very smooth and comfortable for me. Im not even one of the bigger guys and I sat on a raptor and felt cramped. It seems that everything that I drive or ride I like to stretch out. On the 450s and other quads, after riding my DS and then sitting on them they feel like your on a kids bike. The times I really love my DS is when I ride across open fields and roads and flat out fly. So I would say if your going to mainly ride in the sand I would deff. get a DS. If you trail ride like me the DS is still a great quad. Some differences between stock models and manufacturers are this, the best dune quads and drag quads are prob the DS, Raptor, and Banshee. The new 450s both yamaha and honda are very good dune quads, but set up better for MX racing and trails. As for the Kawasaki 400, Suzuki 400, and Arctic Cat DVX 400 (all the same quad) they are great trail quads and MX racing, plus get around fine at the dunes. And the preditor I have never ridden with one but should be a good trail, dunes, and MX quad. Just about all quads are very comparible these days as for top speed and performance, they are just all set up for a certain type of riding they are best at but they will all do almost anything you throw at them. But back to the DS, almost every person on here will agree that they are a strongly built quad that last forever. The DS is extremely reliable and durable. Just go around quad shopping and test drive as many as possible and find the right one for you.

Test Rides.
What a concept.
Not in this town.
I would love to take one out for a while on the trail and really see how they ride.
At this point I will simply have to rely on the comments from all the fine people on this board.
