2004 vs. 2005 ?
#1
OK, seems like I am going to buy myself a new DS-650.
All the comments I got here strongly supported that choice.
A few questions now arrise.
#1.
Should I get the 04 or hang on a couple months and get the 05 when they surface in August?
Does anybody have a clue at what the differences will be this year?
#2.
Whats a reasonable price to pay for the Baja or the Baja-X ??
#3.
What other accessories should I be planning on getting right off the bat for this quad?

1# Don't expect many if any changes. Maybe graphics or something small. THere is rumor that the upper aluminum a-arms are going away for 05. We probably won't hear anything official from Bombardier for a couple of months on the 05. Its all speculation at this point.
2# I'm not sure in your area but in California expect to pay at least $7K OTD for the Baja X. Maybe some of the AZ guys cane comment on this one.
3# Some of the first mods guys typically put on their DS are exhaust (I like Mr HP end cap), Ron Woods 60% clutch springs, K&N filter, re-jet, and maybe a new CDI (Vortex, MSD, RW, etc). After that it really depends on how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go.

Bombardier thus far has only made major changes in the even numbered years. I only own Odd numbered year quads. Does it matter? No - between the 04 and 05 there should be almost zero important changes. I don't think I would bother waiting for the 05, they'll probably move a couple of the stickers around like the did on the 03 Baja. Now if you wait until 2006, you'll probably see a new machine or something interesting.

In case Bomb is watching. . .
Give us the Orange Baja or the old Yellow in the same dimensions as the original 2000 quad but, with some of the other nice goodies (brake lines, etc.) of the new models. Offer them as Desert Racers! But, also do what you can to lighten them up.
Would also be nice to see Bomb offer something like the HRC kit for the 450. Offer a set of cams, a piston and a single carb and a different exhaust end cap as a factory kit. That way when these mags do a shootout with factory (GYTR or HRC) Bomb would have a real offering (not just a tach and lights - more the magazines fault for the way they do that shootout.)

You mean no one on this list has an inside track to the fine folks at Bombardier for a little inside information on whats coming down the pike? Hmmmm. Would have thought you guys had better spys...
So you think 7K is a fair price for a new unit ?

Right now it is all a matter of the almighty $$, what you want to do and your experience level!
I would highly reccommend getting a K&N filter off the bat. Wear the filter out that is on the bike and then put the K&N on. The K&N is cleanable and can be use over and over. Cost savings in the long run for all the bikes! I did not have to re jet.
An aftermarket pipe would be another good choice. I run an MBRP Slip on, noise is a factor in Oregon and that is the main reason I use it. Others don't like the MBRP but I do. will need to re jet
The stock bikes come with a 16 tooth sprocket in the front. Get a fifteen tooth sprocket. I wish I would have changed mine sooner. Ask the desert riders what they run. From the experience I have had, i would run the 15 there.
The 04 CDI is set higher than the earlier models. I have had engine mods done and still run the cdi that came with the bike.
The X has the skid plates and better front shock. The X would be a choice for the desert because of the skid plates come with it.
Call Gary at TVI for a price. That is where I bought mine last year 503-648-1254
