Bowl and "gold cap" screws??
#1
I went to re-jet my carb tonight, and lets just say..it didn't go well. First, I tried to take the cap screws off the top of the carb..would not turn and started to strip alittle. Same darn thing happened to the bowl screws..Whats the best way to get these tight screws off?

Get a pair of vise grips and squeese as tight as possible and then turn the pliers. Or, you can get a dremel tool and make the phillips head screws into flat heads and use the biggest flat head screw driver possible and break them loose.
I did both, but the vise grips worked the best.
Once you get them removed, take the screws to a bolt shop and replace them with some allen head bolts made of metal instead of brass. You will need the same length and diameter as the brass (stock) ones.

Take the carb off the bike and turn it upside down. Get an impact driver and use it the first time to get them out. I've ended up using a Dremel on rounded off phillips heads then using the impact driver on that.
Once they are off throw them away and get allens.
This can be very frustrating!

I dont think I would use a impact driver on a aluminum carb. you have to hit a impact driver pretty hard for it to work right. I would use a small hammer and just tap the end of the screw driver a couple times to shock the screw a little. I would also take it off and set it on a solid surface. it makes all the difference in the world.

It has been a long time since I pulled the stock carb off but, I think you can loosen the cable from the thumb throttle housing then remove the three screws on the brass triangle shaped cover on the carb and pull the slug out from there to get you cable loose.
