i was riding in a rock quarry , temp was around 90, and after riding for a hour or so my light would come on at low idle, rev it up a little and it would go away. my fan was running, oil is full, actully just changed it a week before with mobil 1 10-40 mtx full syn. anybody know what this is?

sensor is probably going out of range. I screwed a pressure gauge with 1/8" fitting directly in the sensor port to verify. mine lasted 2 years. ditched it, and went to a mechanical gauge.

Default another dumb oil light question?

I've found with an oil pressure gauge that any oil with a viscosity of 100 cSt or less at 40C will result in low oil pressure. I run the V-TWIN oil with 130 cSt spec and the pressure is normal. When I ran another oil with 100 cSt spec the pressure was very very low.

oh by the way, what do you do with the sensor wire? wont the light come on if its unplugged? or do you plum it in with the gauge?

If you disconnect the sensor it doesn't drive the red light on; coolant overtemp still works fine. You can also tee the 1/8" NPT port.

I wouldn't run the MX4T oil (if that's what you have). The viscosity is way too low.

Every oil is rated for it's resistance to flow at a given temperature (viscosity).

What I'm saying is from my experience, when I had oil with a similar rating as yours the oil "turned to water" at temperature which causes the pressure to drop (pressure is created by resistance to flow).

I'm saying all DS owners should check the viscosity spec of the oil they use. I don't recommend anyone use an oil with a viscosity spec of 100 cSt or less.

The V-TWIN oil is greater then 100cSt as are many others.

mobil 1 20W50 V-TWIN full synthetic at some walmart's (cheapest) and at autozone.

there are also 10W40 oils that have higher viscosity spec than 100 cSt.
