With the right exhaust, jet kit and intake mods the rappy will stick with a modified YFZ 450. My stock motor raptor is pushing out 49.5 HP on a dyno using stock tires. With Dyno tires it will be around 52 maybe a little more HP on the dyno. My mods are in my signature. If the rappy is not set up right, you have no chance. It is not an easy bike to get dialled in 100% correctly. I ride with a couple of 450's all of them running pipes, no lids and high flow air cleaners and jet kits. The raptor and YFZ is a 100% match all the way till 5th gear. 1 to 4th gear they are right next to each other. In 5th the raptor walks away slowly.
The DS and Baja X with pipe, airbox mods, jet kits and K&N air cleaners, has a slightly slower acceleration, but the top speed on the Bombs are faster than the YFZ.
The YFZ 450 launch very well. The weight advantage is a big bonus. On short drags the YFZ will beat just about any similar mod quad, but give it some length and the Raptor and DS can catch up.
If you are running bigger than 20” tires on a DS or raptor, don’t even try competing with the YFZ. It will kill you.
I saw it the other day again. One of my friends has a modified YFZ 450. Pipe, no lid, pro flow air cleaner, jet kit, 22” tires, dropped one tooth on the front sprocket and dyno tuned. It got spanked by a stock YFZ450 in the sand.
The reason he lost.. 22” tires! His bike makes 47HP on the dyno. It’s about 7 to 10 HP more than a stocker, and he still lost.
Make sure you run the right stuff when you face up to a good YFZ.

freeze, The 22" tires and the 1 tooth lower front sprocket cancel each other out. It still has the same gear ratio as the stocker. Those dyno numbers seem pretty high compared to virtually all other dyno numbers of quad with the same mods. Must be the dyno is off.

We really shouldn't be comparing the DS to the YFZ. It's like apples to oranges. The bikes are totally different and designed for different types of riders, and riding. I don't think there is a perfect quad out there. You have to pick a bike that fits you, and your riding style, and that's it.
Now comparing the YFZ to the 450R. That's always a fun and heated debate.

wow, this has stired the pot a bit, lol,
first of all, where did i ever say where did i ever say a ds or any other quad would hold up to a car crash? i only said that to bring up the point where they wouldnt even take the rim for scrap aluminum because they dont weigh anything, and i'm not saying i don't like that quad because of the lightweight parts, you can make parts thats are strong AND lightweight, but that would be expensive, so you have to choose one or the other, obviously yamaha chose lightweight, and i chose my ds for many of the same reasons blackhawk did, if i had the money i'd have a nice new baja X sittin beside old yeller, and i'm sorry, but maybe i've been missing the posts of people bending and breaking the newer aluminum parts on the ds's, if you could point in the direction i'd appreciate it, i'm not sayin the ds is the perfect quad, sure it does break down and bend things, but it happens alot less than most other machines, i've only had a few minor things go wrong with mine(or atleast weren't my fault, lol), i've done some stupid things on my machine, but it still works great, i've had it roll over once, all that was wrong was the handlebar was a lil tweeked and the clutch lever bent, overshot a jump majorly, about a 12-15' drop onto hard clay, bottomed out so bad the frame took a lil junk outta the ground i smashed my face off the bars bitin half my upper lip off and tearin the muscle in my right leg which also bent the right footpeg, but the rest of the machine was fine, shocks weren't bent, rest of suspension was completely fine, if hit an old stump at night with my a-arm in 2nd gear, ds didn't even notice, similar happened to that yfz, except it was goin a lil faster, and we're still not sure if it was a metal post he hit but the a-arms and shock were bent, i've put it on the back bar quite a few times and ive never had it bend, only paint scraped off, buddy wit ha raptor did that, bent his lil back bar, he did it so many times he had to make a new one, and tires do make a difference, that yfz all stock vs. his brothers ds wit 22" vampires, stock endcap with spark arrestor and tubes cut off, the ds would be a lil behind, wen i was on the ds and there were 2 guys on the yfz(both weighin like 220lbs total, where i weigh around 200) and on a rolling start he'd b 1 length ahead, but put the stock dominators on it and the yfz gets smoked, those vampires are very VERY heavy, i could honestly say that both stock yfz tires weigh about as much as a 1-22" vampires on 10" .190 douglas rims, i'm not sayin the yfz is a big pile of cr@p or anything, its a nice lil machine, but after all the ranting and raving about it i'm pretty dissapointed in it,alrite, i'm done with this post now

Hi Cop.
The dyno numbers where confirmed on two different dynos. I don't have my own dyno meter and I use two different guys to do the testing on the bikes I worked on. The YFZ's 47 HP is low actually. A well tuned YFZ 450 with basic mods should actually be around 49HP. The 49.5 HP on the raptor is also not special. Other guys with other dynos have similar results. I can list some independent web sites that confirm my numbers. I used stock tires to get 49.5 HP on the raptor as well as the 47HP on the 450. If you use dyno tires they produce higher HP figures. It’s fine for Mr HP to get 53Hp out of the DS with dyno tires, but when you make similar claims on a Yamaha with a similar size motor, people say it cannot be done. Mr HP does some great work and he spends time getting the Ds set up right. I do the same on the Raptor and they make the same power if done right.
I have seen modified raptor doing 40HP and less, but they have been tuned by people that don't care a damn and are not willing to spend the time to get it running perfect.
On the CT web site they claim 49HP for the raptor, as well as Dirtwheels found the raptor to make 49 HP. Same as what I found.
Here is a web site link to show what the 450 HP figures do.
450 mods and how much HP they create.
The 04 DS is using an aluminium upper a-arm. I heard that some people have bent them and I also heard that the 05 model DS do not come with them anymore for this reason. I might be wrong, so have a look and see what you can find.
I am not trying to dis the DS, but each bike is deferent and they all have their good and bad points.

Don't believe a word this guys says not true, stock for stock I've seen it over and over the yfz walks away from the DS everytime, even different riders, Your going to have to put money in your DS like me to walk away from the yfz "and thats the fact jack"

Smashing,
Your buddies DS with motor work is way out of tune if its getting beat by a 450.
The 450 is light and quick out of the box but its potential is almost maxed from the factory. Yes some improvements can be made but whats left to do? Bigger cams? It already turns 11,000rpm. More cylinder head flow? Its a factory designed race head with 5 titanium valves. This is a full blown race engine from the factory. I dynoed a YFZ with the GYTR package and retarded exhaust cam and it made 53hp at 9000rpm once we had it tuned perfect. My DS with Lectron46HV made the same power at 6300rpm. Now should we talk about torque?? My bike made 49ft lbs. The YFZ made 32ft. lbs. It appears that the torque showed up at the race track the next weekend.
