YFZ vs DS... yep another thread on the topic
#1
I was riding my DS in the natural Habitat of the YFZ, an MX track. There was a guy real brawny about his vaunted Yammy. I wanted to race him in a drag but there wasn't a "legal" place to top out a bike. So we took it to the track. I spanked him all over. Lap times, air height, etc. He could get me around the turns but that was about it. Then we swapped bikes. I rode about 1/8th of the track with the YFZ and I wanted to saddle up back on to my DS.
The YFZ felt very light, revs fast and has a quasi 2-Stroke powerband (almost like a Banshee down low on the throttle). Now for my nitpicks; the suspension is absolutely horrible and the egronomics is geared for a a smaller person. I'm by no means over 200 lbs and I am about 5"10" in height (I've seen bigger guys on a YFZ, Hightower and Bigwaynster can name one last year at Silver Lake). It bounced me all over the place, almost like you have to struggle to keep this thing wide open and hang on. Keep in mind I was fatigued from racing him on my DS and felt even more exhausted running over the ruts that were placed all over the track.
In the end, after all the hype surrounding the YFZ I don't think it's for everyone. I really think what makes it so fast is it's power to weight ratio. Perhaps a properly modded one with the cam mod, exhuast, porting, etc will leave me more impressed, after my DS is far from stock. Maybe I'm spoiled or too accustomed to the DS. After the dust settled, the owner of the Yammie rider agreed that the DS ate the rough stuff up much better and was a more comfortable ride and did give props where props was due.
