machining the hubs
#1
I was wondering if anyone had tried to machine some of the weight out their stock hubs. I saw some pictures from Mr. HP that looked liked he had but wasn't shure. also if anyone knows how much weight savings they got and pictures of the hubs after would be nice.

I lightened the hubs same time I instaled aluminum sprocket hub and aluminum sprocket. all 3 combined for a total shed of 7 lbs. this was a nice step towards a faster rev and shorter time between shift points, and I'd imagine a small increase in rear wheel hp too, but I have done no dynoing to show it.
the newer ds models already have the aluminum sprocket hub, and from the pics I've seen the factory hubs look to be a little lighter than the older models, so turning the hubs on the '03 and newer may not show the same gains I got but every little bit does count.
my hubs weighed 6.08lbs. for the pair with lugs removed, and were turned down to weigh 3.70 lbs. this is nearly 2.5 lbs. removed, and I dune and trail ride and have never had a durability problem. I do not take big air, never leave the ground more than about 5 feet, and rarely jump faster than 3rd gear, so I can't say what the limit of durability is, but I pound them hard on the rocky rooty trails and so far so good.

sorry the first link put above was wrong, its fixed now....
sandman I use Sprocket Specialists too.
the hub will shed 3 lbs., I got mine from HPResearch but the dealer can get it if yours is smart enough to even know they've changed, he has to order the right one cause I here the new newer ones are different and won't fit our axles right, not sure. supposedly there are 3, the old cast steel one, the newer aluminum, and the newest that is used with the style axle nut too, don't quote me on that though.

it can be a pain getting the old one off, I had to put several tons on it in a press along with heating up the old hub with a torch for expansion while under pressure before it started budging, and it was hard pressing the whole way off. but the new one goes on easy, had to press it but no heat needed.
