The towing problem is not because its a single axle, its because they put a weaker rear axle on the truck to keep it under the 26000 pound limit for class 5 trucks. That way you dont have to have a special license to drive it. It will handle much more weight, its actually a class 7 truck with smaller axles.
This truck was released over a year ago. But the price has jumped 30k, it used to sticker at 68k bucks and that was with the class 7 axles. But they have changed from the old 5 speed allison auto to another trans. They just made a big press release to get some publicity and heighten interest. Its a pretty cool truck, but pretty much just a heavy duty truck that IH threw a box on and sold to consumers and private companies. Of course, they had to jack up the price to do that too.

talking about hp and mph, just bought a 38' pusher motorhome w/330 cat and allison 6 speed on a freightliner chassis. now i know 80mph might seem week and 330hp dosn't seem like much, but when going down the road at 75-80mph with 30,000lbs+ and a trailer it's just fine.

Ever seen the class 7 / 8 rigs that instead of one large trailer, they have double small trailers? The first trailer is pulling the second one using a dolly, and they are both 5th wheels. It would seem you could use this same sort of dolly to pull a 5th wheel trailer in a big truck like one of these. However you would then be Class A, and you could not back up more than a couple of feet. I bet you could make some sharp turns though!
Or just get a trailer that fits onto a standard ball style hitch and make a nice custom mount.
