If you bog out with slow acceleration = too rich. Spark plug could be black or very dark brown.

Popping and or backfiring with high temps = lean. Spark plug could be white on electrode.

chirochris,
I put the HMF pipe on for riding at silver lake, spark arrestor needed, and possible sound check.

End cap was louder, but I have been very happy with the HMF pipe.

I like being able to change to the quite core in less than 2 minutes if I need to quite her down.
Running just the spark arrestor with out the quite core and I get plenty of low end torque, this is the way I like it, but it is a little on the loud side when I am above 4,000 RPM's.
The HMF pipe has great flow and sound, my jetting stayed the same as when I had the endcap on.

make sure you start with a clean filter to do the jetting.
