jackass, (no insult intended)
when you simply change the gas from 91 octane, to 87 octane that is the timing advance. 87 octane gas burns at a lower temperature, and therfore will ignight sooner than the 91 which Bombardier recomends. There is no mechanical way to advance timing - the only other way to advance timing is to buy a CDI box with advanced timing.
On my 2001 DS650 I am running with 4 coils cut off the spring, jetted correctly, 87 octane gas and the air system in stock configuration except for the snorkel tubes are run outside of the frame. The engine runs very well for a stock engine. Oh and I also had my intake ported by Mr. HP as well. Basically if you add two HP here, and two HP there, it turns into a good amount when you are all said and done. The end result being a machine that runs very strong and will make you happy.
Concerning the needle in the 5th (lowest) clip position - I couldn't run it this way on either of my DS650s as they both coughed and choaked too much, so I'd try the 5th position and see what happens. Good thing the DS is so easy to re-jet in stock trim!

I cut the spring in both my 2001 and 2003, the springs were slightly different, but the same height. I have two extra springs I paid $5 each for. I'd cut the spring - the worst that will happen is you'll need a new spring. If you are nervous, send me $5 through paypal or something and I'll send you a spring so you can go back to stock. Or hell, cut the spring I mail to you. (Or get it from the dealer and do the same thing.)
