Default Rider or DS problem?

As much as I don't want to admit it, I have been beaten by a friends stock Z400 a few times. He gets the hole shot and in a short race I can’t catch him. He doesn’t pull away but I can’t make up much ground. In long races more than 3rd gear I can drive by him. Is this odd? The race was in Dirt.

My DS seams to run good.

The motor is stock except for a K&N filter, Cut 3 coils of the slide spring, Stock main Jet, needle in the last position, 15 tooth sprocket.

what gear are you starting in? should be second. how do you rate your tires? do they seem to hook up good to where your having trouble wheeling? or are you spinning wildly leaving ruts and long trenches.

also I see you have no exhaust mod, this will hurt you cuz the Ds in mostly stock cond. is a mid to top end monster. also is you air box lid on or off?

Is his got mods?

we should hook up and do some riding, your not that far from where Im at.

I am starting in 1st gear, if I start in second it will wheelie like crazy. My tires are only 2 months old (22X11X9 Razr's) I'm not sure how bad it's spinning, it doesn't dig a trench but you can tell were I shift at by looking at the trail. The air box lid is on

I have a modified end cap but I ride at a place called the Mounds a lot and they are really bad about noise.

Are you running stock height tires? How do you like the 15 tooth sprocket?

When I switched to the 15 tooth sprocket it felt better trail riding but racing it feels like it revs out to quick not against the rev limiter, but almost like it rev’s hard and suddenly falls to a dead spot were it's not making power.

The guy that owns the Z400 is a good friend of mine, about the only person I ride with, it’s totally stock with the exception of a K&N filter

sam were do you ride a usually?

Thanks

Your setup doesnt sound bad at all. I dont want to be mean but unless your machine is losing power somewhere its a rider issue.

Put your weight as far forward as possible and slip the clutch. It takes a lot of practice to get a good start, espeically if you are in 2nd.

Did you re-jet after you put that end cap on? Sounds like your lean on top to me. No way a Z400 should be even close to you, let alone beating you. try a 170 or a 175 main.

I'm going to try to make it to silver lake or bull gap this weekend. Probably the last trip I'll make for the year, seeing as how its freezing and wet at the dunes and they close after this weekend.
