Default Engine Backup & CDI Box

You know that annoying noise when you go to start you quad and it tries to go in reverse you know the one that sound like the gears are stripping on the starter. Yea that’s the one. Well I have this theory. my noise started about the same time I put a new CDI box on my quad and I thing it may be because of the CDI box . I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem and tried to switch out the CDI box. I have the Pro-Com. I thought I would run this by you guys before I order a RWR CDI box.

If its not the CDI box causing the problem I need to find a fix before I have to order 1500.00 worth of parts again.

I think the problem may be too much advance on the ignition, I have a +5 degree coil pick up( and aftermarket CDI) I have run twice and each time I have run it the grinding sound returns occasionally when it doesn't start right away. I have removed the advance pick up and will not be using it again, just my thoughts. What kind of advance does the procom have?

I have the same problem with the procom cdi. I did break a flywheel key at the dunes because of it.

it is definetly too much advance at least at lower rpms. I have the msd box and mistakenly had it sell at full advance around 2000 rpms I was having tons of trouble starting and that damn nasty grinding noise. Finally I figured out that when I adjusted the msd's settings is when it started to happen. So I change it so that full advance does not come on until like 6000rpms and wala problem solved. starts and runs easier than ever. kyle

I just installed a procom CDI on my 04 DS about two weeks ago. So far I have rode 3 times. Ive started the bike up I would say about 20 times with no problems. Are you having this problem at your initial startup, when the bike is cold, or even after it warms up ? Also how long did it take for the grinding to start ? If I have a problem I will be sure to post it. Thanks, D

My DS started running bad and missing like it was lean. I jetted up, and tried new plugs, plug checks indicated lean, i jetted up way to far and still had white plugs. Pulled my procom CDI and slapped the stock unit in, and then it puffed black smoke and had black plugs. Slapped the origonal jets back in and wham! Runs great now!

The price was right, but Ill never by from Procom again...

You get what you pay for i guess?

My quad goes fast enough with the stock cdi for now. ( at least till i scrape up the cash for a 46HV carb)

Me out..........
