Is this my problem?

Last Christmas i got a 2003 DS baja and i havent got to ride a lot, its actually still bone stock, i have mods, but i havent got them put on. Anyhow, i was riding not too long ago and it just died, i wasnt even riding hard. and it hasnt started since then, i played with it for a while today, and my father, who is by no means a mechanic, said its not taking in air right, or that was my translation of his redneck, profane, and obnouxious comment. so i put in a new k&n air filter and it still didnt help anything, so is there any way that its just my carb or something, i have heard of an air/mixture screw but i dont know where thats at. is this my problem? or could it be other things? thanx in advance.

Cline,
If its dead and wont start, the things I check for is a fouled plug, spark, and fuel. When you try and start it, do you smell fuel from the exhaust pipe? If not, then you have a problem in the carb with fuel starvation. By checking the plug, you can tell if its wet with fuel after you try and start it - again, if there is none, then you have a carb problem. You can also check the spark plug for spark and see if its an electrical problem. To do this, remove the plug, make sure there is no open fuel around anywhere, put the plug back into the spark plug electrical socket (not back in the motor), and ground the plug threads to the motor and crank it over. If you see an arc on the plug, then you have spark. If not, then thats your problem.

i didnt have a chance to mess with it a whole lot yeterday, i did however check the spark plugs, and let me tell ya, they got spark, a buddy was helping me and thought i said to try to start it before i had grounded it, and it was just in my hand and it let me know real fast it had spark. i will update sometime by the end of the day. oh, and can anyone tell me where the air/mixture screw is on the carb? or all the screws and adjustments on the carb? thanx again.

Make sure the fuel is fresh. Gasoline has a shelf life of about 30 days. The by product of bad fuel is tars and gums left in the fuel system, like in the jets and idle circuits. food for thought......

good call Zoomer...bad gas will have a funky sour smell. Wiff some new stuff (one wiff only!!) and then smell the tank. Its an obvious difference.
I wouldn't touch the A/F screw unless you think somebody else monkeyed with it. If you got spark and gas that thing will run.
If you put gas in last year and haven't drained it, that is definitely an issue.

On the same topic...most race fuels have a stabilizer in them so they should be good for loner periods of time. You can buy fuel stabilizers to add to pump fuel. This will help the fuel from turning to the gums and tars. Gumout makes a fuel stabilizer, there is a brand called Sta-Bil and there are probably others. I have seen it at WalMart, automotive parts houses, Marine supply and small engine shops. Sta-Bil's site..good info
