Default 2nd gear launch - how long till my clutch is gone

Thanks Hightower.

Thanks Blackhawk, appreciate that. No hurry. I'll probably take a quick trip out to the dunes on suberbowl weekend to see how the jetting is after I change pipes and to try and figure out if the clutch is still okay. Maybe I wasn't revving it up all the way to the limiter, but I thought I was revving it pretty good.

Darren, If I were you I would find a used w/ acc pump tm 45/48mm or a lectron 46/48. Hog out your intake and match with head as good as possible. Get a ron wood cdi, dropp a tooth in the front countersprocket. And if you can get the double buffed 8 paddle 22-23s.

If you really dont want your clutch to slip, Get the 9 disc barnett with PAMI springs and put a circular light sand on the steel plates. Also try to run 10/40 valvoline motorcyle oil from checker or autozone. I would recomend changing the oil after every 5-10 hours to be safe.

Default 2nd gear launch - how long till my clutch is gone

Well I went to Dumont this past Saturday. The place is just too damn busy. The hill was packed. Sandrails with the wheels in the air about 90% of the time not looking out for quads. I would guess most quad riders are used to this. It's new to me....

Anyway, I finally found a spot to shoot the hill. I liked the idea of the down ramp before the hill (thought that would help....). As soon as I get ready...a raptor pulls up on my right and about 5 other quads on my left....DAMN! So I had to do the 2nd gear 7700rpm drop. Well next thing I know I am draggin *** in the sand. So the down ramp didnt help me. I would guess I am used to the armagosa sand. It felt like I was shot from a cannon till it was on its rear rack. I turned around and tried again and it was about to do the same, I had to let off a bit.

I guess I need a longer swingarm. But I desert ride alot also, so that makes me think not an option.

If I am just running 20" V-edge paddles now and it wont stay down what are 22" haulers going to do!

My clutch seems fine .... so far.

I run 22" 9 paddle haulers with stock swingarm and drop the clutch in second around 5-6K RPM and don't have any problems with the front end coming up. See my mods below. When I first bought the DS I had a lot of trouble keeping the front end down but have figured out how to lauch it now without it being a problem. You've got to straddle the gas tank and I also found that taking some of the preload out of the front shocks drops the front end significantly which seems to help keep the front end down. Have you tried playing with the preload?

No I haven't. It sits lower than a stock one, friend of mine has the same exact DS and brand new. Mine actually has about 14 months of hard riding so my shocks and springs are settled quite a bit. I was thinking of doing exactly what you said, drop the front down for the hill. I am leaning forward but not extreme.

I havent adjusted shocks like this, how do you keep left and right matched? Is it just simply counting the turns?

You can pretty much eyeball it. I use my thumb and index finger to compare the two sides until they are about equal. IF you want to be exact use a ruler or tape measure. FYI you can easily rotate the preload nuts with your hands if you first lift the front wheels off of the ground to release the pressure from the springs. Give it a try and let us know how it works out.

Default 2nd gear launch - how long till my clutch is gone

My bike was in the 4 stroke wars this last weekend in Glamis in the +501 Bolt On Class. We won the prelims with hands down and in the semi's won the first 2 races and then could'nt win a race for nothing. Hard1 called me up yesterday and said that it is probably because of the stock springs in the clutch. After reading some of these posts I am thinking that is why the quad started losing. 05BlackBombOfied

I had just a couple of riding hours on my ds when I did the same mods as yours and my springs wouldnt hold it. I went with the RW 60% springs and it did great untill I went in the motor. Now I have the barnett 9disk, before you order the 60% think about if you are going to upgrade later, I wish that I would have.
PS. Congrats on glamis.

I really appreciate this post, cause I was ready to buy the RW 60% springs today. But was thinking also about a new clutch and springs. Where did you get your barnett 9disk and how much. I am ready to order today.. Thanks 05BlackBombOfied

BajaX, I know Mario has good intentions, but DO NOT get double buff Haulers, unless you are only going to shoot the hills at Armagossa and Dumont.

You will puncture them if you get out of the real soft stuff.

22" Etreme Haulers are what you want for where you ride. DO NOT USE THEM AT NELLIS!

Definitly go down to a 15 tooth front sprocket though, it really helps.

Also, I will be out at Dumont this Saturday running the hill with the Pig.
