Dunefest 2005-- July 27-31, 2005

I was there last year and will go again this year if they make some changes. I don't drink except on a very rare occasion. I don't mind the no alcohol restriction. I do mind being subjected to 'gestapo' searches of my home. By that I mean my motorhome or trailer. I believe that is in violation of my constitutional rights. If they want to keep alcohol off the sand they have my support, but the way they are going about it is not tolerable. I know of at least one group who was leaving the cheap beer for them to find while having the good stuff where it couldn't be found. I hope they make the needed changes. Other than the searches I had a lot of fun last year.

The rules as published so far ...
1) No alcohol in the event area (beyond the entrance gate) will be permitted.
2) All vehicles and people entering the event area are subject to a safety search. (In other words, search without probable cause)

Last year they had a funny rule about speed limits. You couldnt go more than 15 mph anywhere near a person, quad or campsite. If you did, you were, you would be penalized for 3 times the amount of damage you could have caused.
There was also a rule about not having the VIN number on your frame. If it wasn't they would impound your quad.
They also had a funny rule about camping. Non-related people couldn't camp together.
Right now there is no clarification on these rules, but I have emailed them to find out if they are the same this year. Many people boycotted the event last year because of these rules. I have my own opinion on them - but people should be aware of them before they make a purchase for the event since refunds are not allowed either.

If they enforce search without probable cause, I will boycott this year. There are other ways to handle the alcohol problem.
We camped in parking lot 5 I think it was and that was beyond the 'event area' gate. If they want to search my quad as I go on the sand, no problem, but don't invade the privacy of my home while I am just camping.

In my opinion, the event really needs to be moved away from Winchester Bay. The locals have pretty much gone on record as not wanting these events, or even OHV on the dunes. If you want to send a message, vote with your dollars. Freedom is not free. If you do go, and dont like the rules, dont buy anything there.
