Default Cutting Carb Spring

Today we took my sons 05 Baha X carb apart.
The spring in the carb appeared much shorter.
I took the spring out of the 01 DS and compared them to each other.
The 05 spring is almost a 1/2 " shorter.
Its total length measured 3 3/16
I have cut the 01 to 3" and that was removing 5 coils.
When compressing both springs the 05 is weaker, appears to be a smaller wire.

Note: If you are going to cut coils off your spring, do not cut the spring less than 3 inch.
This is just 1/8 longer than no load length. A little preload is needed so that slide will not bounce.

The old forums that said to cut 4 coils will definitely cause problems with new shorter factory springs.

Just wanted to share some info.

Default Cutting Carb Spring

I think I cut 4 springs on my 04 if I remember. Or maybe it was the '03. I'll have to check on thst one. Either way, it seems to run pretty good... LOL

if the '05 spring is shorter and lighter then it would seem the factory has recognized the benefit of all the previous cutting and elliminated the need on these latest models.

Very good post oldmanracing, could very well save a lot of guys future problems.

Default Cutting Carb Spring

VERY good Post indeed... My brother just bought a new BAJAX and we were talking about the modification to the stock carb, so I am glad to read about this now, so now I wont have to learn the hard way this weekend

Thanks OLD man!

Default Cutting Carb Spring

I did not cut my sons new 05 spring.
He had just installed a new endcap and we wanted to do some testing before doing any mods.
Testing was limited since we had 8 inches of new snow.
Definity the endcap makes alittle more bottomend torque than a HMF pipe.
Based on the 05 spring being weaker, the amount of gain will be very little, hard to measure.
When the weather is better we are going to do testing, first to compare stock jet needle to a dyno jet needle.
Then open the two vacuum ports to 1/8 inch. Then cut the spring to 3 inches.
When this is completed we will compare this carb to the 01 carb with a modified emulsion tube and special spring.
The 01 has the timing advanced. By testing both carbs on machines with different timing we will better understand
which carb configuration/timing combo works best.
I do not have a dyno close to do testing, so by changing carbs and racing against eachother, this will help us collect the data.
We now have 14 inches of snow on the ground. Can't wait till spring.

I wouldn't cut my spring. I'd opt to purchase another that is either shorter or has a lighter tension.
Once you cut the spring you have no options if you don't like the way it reacts and in addition cutting it does nothing for the tension of the remaining coils. Purchasing a softer coiled spring and or shorter seems like a better option. And besides you can always switch back to the original in a heart beat if needed. I did the same thing with the carb on my Harley. I purchased a spring from another model that had a racing setup in the carb (SE).

The drilling out of the vacuum ports does help.
The reason I drilled out to .125 was because that is all there is left.
The ports are around .100 from factory.
When you look from the inside of vacuum tube the clearances around the vacuum ports are right next to the walls. Going bigger may cause other problems. I have heard some guys drill more holes, but what goes up too fast will come down too fast. Slide flutter gets worst.

I have experimented with softer springs and that helps greatly.
What you want is a spring that has more load at rest to get velocity up quickly.
Has the spring gets compressed you want it to be lighter than stock.
This makes for great mid and top. Slide flutter eliminated.

I am into my 3rd experiment with the stock carb. Different needle jet , modied emulsion tube and a 4th new spring is turning out better than I thought.

Now if the snow would go away.
