Default AIR FUEL MIXTURE ERROR???

The screw on the black hose is the idle adj. if you look at my pictures page the last 3 are the bsr 42 carb and parts list.
Screw #19 adjusts the starter jet. Also here is a link to another picture that might help.

Default AIR FUEL MIXTURE ERROR???

I thought on the mikuni carb it is actually a fuel screw, not an air screw? All I know is that you back it out to get more fuel, and turn it in for less fuel (out=richer...in=leaner)

The glowing pipes (at night) are not out of the norm for newer engines. What is out of the norm is the popping you describe, that's a lean condition but the two symptoms would not be connected (as in a problem) in the Japenese bikes. These long time DS guys can weigh in but I wouldn't be concerned about the nighttime pipe thing.
I agree.

If screw is between throttle slid and rear of carb-towards motor , it is a fuel screw,
thus-out CCW is rich and in CW is lean.
If screw is between throttle slid and front of carb-away from motor, it is a air screw,
thus - out CCW is lean and in CW is rich.
