Default first ride, stage one

finally finished my stage one 2 weeks ago, took it to the dyno and was a little disappointedonly gained 1.7 HP. and lost 2.2 torque. I was undecided as to whether I should sell the pipe and run the stocker or keep the Woods pipe. I decided to take it for a spin first. As stated many other times by many knowledgeable people " We don't ride on a dyno." It felt a lot snappier and pulled much harder on the top end than with the stocker with my end cap. And it was dyno-tuned with the stock pipe, modded end cap as well. Everything was done at the same shop so the differences weren't due to being on different dynos. I'm gonna keep the Woods pipe on if for no other reason than it looks really good on my bike. We'll see how it really runs next month at LS OK. Hope to see a lot of you there.

Hey Crazy, do you have a friend or somebody you could race and see if there is a difference? (I mean someone you have raced before). I had the same problems my DS felt stronger but didnt run any faster, I guess it was wishfull thinking on my part.

I bought my ds with the stage 1 kit and didn't get the chance to ride it without the kit. It does pull hard all the time and I wish I had a 6th gear. I just ordered a tach to see what I'm really doing to the motor. I read about the speeds guys are doing with stock quads and I can't get there. I'm not sure if my gps is a tad slow in locking in top speed, but one time riding at 7200 feet elevation I got a speed of 73 and still going. I'm now back to 450 feet elevation and have a hard time getting past 68 mph. I'm not sure if the stage 1 really does anything except boost your ego and make alot of noise.

budman, sounds like your main jet is at least one size to small. If you were at like a 180, I'd go to a 185 or maybe 182.5. GPS top speed is a good indicatator of full throttle jetting.

You should be able to pull 75+ mph when you're jetted for your main riding area.

Same dyno - different day can get different readings too.

Did you TUNE the bike on the dyno? How many pulls on the dyno did you do?

What's your air intake? Air filter type and mount? Ported intake?

Think of it this way. . . if you eat a huge meal, what do you want to do in about 1/2 an hour???

If you have an open exhaust but, you are restricted on the intake your engine is hungry for more air and you really aren't gaining the power. The pipe will help but, you may need more air. I'll assume you have a full Stage 1 kit with some sort of higher flow intake so, your jetting may be off when on the dyno or you may just have one of the lower # days on the dyno.

Glad to hear it is more responsive.

Wouldn't the elevation kill the motor all around? When I first bought the quad, I ask Woods Racing about jetting since I wasn't sure where it originally was set up. They said occasional use at 7000 feet was OK, but their set up was good for 0-500 feet. Now you got me thinking and I'll throw in some new plugs and do another reading. It definately isn't low on power. We rode today and the yzf 450's and 450r's couldn't touch my top end. Still lovin' it!

What do you consider a long run? A 1/8 mile and I'm already looking for another gear. Maybe I'm not giving it a chance. That's why I bought a tach. What rpm's do you run? I'm also on a gravel road and can hear the wheels brake loose at times.
