I bought my "03" Baja used and had it shipped to Arizona from back east. I've had it to the dunes a couple of times and when climbing the hill I can't get it over 7000 rpm. I actually got beat by a 2005 Preditior wihich I believe, is only a 550. I'm not sure what the main jet but the other jet I changed from a 190 to a 180, and the people at camp said it smells lean. Someone put a "Ron Woods" CDI box and it has a HMF slip on. As far as I know the sprockets are stock and I took the lid off the air box, so does anyone have any ideas about what the problem might be.

To make you feel worse the Predetor is only 500cc. Could you please tell me what a quad running lean smell's like? Thats the first I have heard of that. As far as your jets are concerned you say you changed it to a 180, do you know if it is a mikuni jet or a dyno jet there is a difference. If you are running a 180 Dynojet then your friends must be bloodhounds cause that sounds lean.

If you are at 7k rpm, you should be right were the meat of the power is, any higher and it should be time to shift. Not being able to get over 7k rpm up a hill does not tell us much about the motor, too many variables such as gearing, tires, etc.
You said you are not sure what the main jet you are running, then you said you changed a jet from 190 to 180, that IS you your main jet. Why did you change the jet? Was it running too rich with the 190?
I too am curious what lean smells like. Running rich smells like fuel so do running lean smell like lack of fuel

The 180 dyno jet is about equivalent to 170 mikuni jet, which should be lean. Are you at sea level?
Since you are running the dynojet main and you also running a dynojet needle?
When I had similar mods as you, I followed Dynojets instructions exactly and the jetting was right on.

Yes it is a Dynojet needle set 4th slot down from the top and a stock spring, tires used are 10 paddel Haulers can't say what the size is at this time. Would a Ron Woods CDI box do anything more than a stock Baja box? I should be able to get 8000 RPM, actually I shouldn't be getting beat by a Preditor.
