Default 500 to spend, what to upgrade?

Well I decided I will do one more goodie on the ds, before all my cash is devoted to other places (just got a new focus SVT, and the rims alone for it are 1k...lol)

I currently have HMF pipe
KN in box with outerwear
Jetted (supposedly...lol sometimes I get lazy set it rich and forget it because I get tired of holding the group up)
MR.HP ported intake
Big gun CDI (currently not on the bike...kind of worried it is the culprit for making my sprag clutch go bye bye...and dont want my next 500 to be paying for a sprag clutch again! Not sure If I will put it on ever or not...have run the last 10 hours or so without it on, and didnt really notice a change, besides the obvious lowered rev limit)
15 tooth CT on, usually run that with my 22 sand stars, 22 inch realtors, or 20 inch stockers.

the 500 dollar price is negotiable...but not going to double. I am currently considering things based on: Power gained - Ease of installation (if its not somthing I can do myself easily, I will be paying a shop 55 an hour to do it) - power/cost ratio.

So far I am considering:
Cams (probably go with Mr.HP...is there a grind that is midrange, yet still worth the cam install?) I want somthing with good power overall, or at least no power loss anywhere. Is this a tough install?

Piston... Not sure if this is somthing I should be considering, but would probably go with the JE 11:1 so I can still run 93. (not sure if it would be worth the cost) How hard is this to install? I could borrow tools like a ring compressor...but I dont think this is a mod that would net all that much power, considering It would probably take a long time to install?

Carb. I have read up on the carb battles for a long time, and the 46hv is definitely out! I dont like having even an ounce of risk of that sucker sticking open, not to mention I do a lot of trail riding with slower riders sometimes, so i dont want to be revving at 4k and feathering it just to keep it smooth.
I think the most viable option would be the trusty old TM, but would probably want the accel pump, and would want as clost to stock throttle as possible (call me a wimp, but if my little thumb has to do much work at all I get thumb fatigue really easily)

How well does the TM hold a tune? I have read some say it sucks for climate/weather changes, and some say it is better than stock. I know a bit about tuning, but still am far from good at it. Seems like having access to the main by removing a bolt would make changing that easy, but am wondering about the other circuits? I dont like jetting more than once a day, and that might include traveling up mountains, from say 3k feet/above up to 7k feet/above, then back down.

Does dial-a-jet play into an aftermarket carb decision?

Beyond those 3, I cant really think of too many good upgrades for my ds. I am pretty satisfied with the stock suspension, only other thing I could see is possibly shaving down the hubs, and changing the sprocket hub (whatever it is that on the 04's it is about a pound lighter)

I apolgozie for making novel-type threads, but I want to lay everything out on the table, so I make the right decision.

As usual, thank in advance for your help!

The TM sure seems simple to work with. Very clean carb compared to the stock one! If you have the intake you should have the TM to complete your intake upgrade. I was having trouble with starting my DS with the stock carb with my mods. With the TM its perfect and a sure start every time. The choke works excellent also. Easy access to the jet via the bowl plug is great. Now there is one bad thing about the TM. The throttle route is not easy to do, you have to take your time and try many different ways to get a perfect route. I also used my stock cable. I didnt cut anything off my cable. I did locate a small section of threaded metal tube (got mine from an old thumb throttle adjuster) and put it on the hex carb end of the cable and a thin jamb nut. This acts as a sleeve stop for in the carb cable seat. After working with routing the cable and finding the perfect way, I cant be happier with the setup. The TM made my DS do things in 4th that I could only do in 3rd before. It also revs so quick I have to relearn my shifting timing. My thumb feel is very near stock. I was planing on putting a thumb lever extension on to ease the thumb pump, but so far I dont see any reason to install one.

I also have a ported intake.

As far as different altitudes, I can't say much.....Yet.

Hmm... Where did you buy your TM? I may buy one used, that way I could spend the rest of the 200 or so left over on lightening up the ds drivetrain.

Did you spend much time tuning the stocker? how do you compare tunability compared to the stock mikuni? (both ease of phsycially jetting, and the ease of finding the right Air/fuel to match ur needs?)

How exactly do you reach all the circuits? I know the main is up under that bolt, can you get access to the pilot/starter there as well?

Does the needle work in a similar way as stock? (how hard is it to get to it?)

Thanks for your input, its very much appreciated!

Call me assanine, but...... My lectron works just fine. Set it up right and there are no worries about it sticking. I ride in sand 95% of the time. No problems with the idle or sticking. I think that with the HPR cams and 14.1 setup i could get the full potential of the carb.

I got my carb used. It seems to be very close as it is. The air fuel screw sits on your left leg side, very easy to adjust. The slide is a flat slide door. I havent adjusted the needle yet, seems fine. The top of the carb has a plate you take off, looks like its the way in...again very simple.

Adjusting the stock carb, its not a huge pain, but its not even close to as easy and as simple as this TM. The stock carb was a pain just in the soft srews all over it. People talk about tuning the stock carb on here all the time and say you can get more power out of it. I just look at it this way....more air....more HP. Yes this gets into a whole discussion of too much in the wrong area is less HP. But a DS has bottle necks everywhere in stock form. You need to open everything up to really see a real nice increase. All of it. Cams, Head porting, intake, Carb, Filter, Exhaust, ignition, Valves, bla bla bla. So if you have a ported intake I would finish that part off with a bigger carb. Try and keep all your mods in the same range.

Not sure if you are a car guy, but if you are.....the stock carb I would compare to a quadrojet for its "clutter" and the TM to a Holley for its simplicity (lack of crap).

Also, I run the IMS 5 gallon tank and the TM......BARELY FITS!

Money is my bottle neck in my DS. But its the first thing in my toy box to get the go fast stuff. This is just playing with it for now. Things will turn around soon and you will hear from me even more. Till then, lets see what I can do on that DS of yours.....

my lectron works fine also no sticking at all, and will pulll the bike around on rough terain at idle no need for feathering the clutch and revs.
