Default This was an interesting find!

I pulled my water pump cover tonite to drain the coolant. I am installing an ESR temp gage in the upper hose. Whan I pulled the cover this is what I found.

[pictures in gallery]

It looks like the impeller has been rubbing the pump cover?!?! Any body else seen this? The impeller looks fine. It does not apear to have the same wear pattern as the groovs warn in the cover.
Any ideas?

First I have to ask why you pulled the whole cover to drain the fluid? There is a drain screw on the cover.

With out there being any wear marks on the impeller to match the marks on the cover, it would make me think that there may of been some sort of debri in there such as sand or metal.

check for end play on the impeller shaft. side to side. in and out. there should be very minimal movement. just a couple thousands at the most.

Thanks for the replys. First, this is the first time I have ever drained it. I was told the cover had to come off. I now see the the bottom cover bolt is the drain "plug".
As far as play, there is zero side to side, as far as in any out, there is some, I havn't measured it but I am taking a wild guess from memory, seems like it was about 1/16 if an inch, maybe less. I hope to measure it tonite.

By the way, on second inspection, there was a coniderable amout of metal that settles out in the drain pan. It was definetly alluminim, I'm sure from the cover.

Replace the water pump seals while you are there. If you're riding yellow you are due to change it.

I got the gage from www.LSPSonline.com $89.99

Water pump seals? Where the impeller goes throught the engine case or the O ring on the cover?
