Oil Change
#1
I changed my oil today, new filter, coolant etc. Well tonight I went to the mx track and for some reason my oil light stayed on the whole night. I stopped after a few laps to see if i could figure out what was wrong. I checked it and the oil was perfectly normal. Let it set for about 15 mins and it was still fine. So i kept on riding. Well by the end of the night its still on. Is this normal?

the red light is for warning you, ignoring it will bite a guy eventually. its possible there is a malfunction causing the light to stay on, but you still need to rule out the potential that it is on for the right reason before just continuing to ride with the light on. sometimes after an oil change the oil supply pump has trouble getting primed depending on draining methods, requiring the bleeding of the system via. the bleed screw behind the filter. but this must not be your case, or else your motor would be nothing more than a boat anchor by now.
the red light warns of 2 things - high antifreeze temp, or low oil pressure. if you unplug the wires coming from the two sensors involved one at a time, you will find which one is turning the light on. the oil pressure sensor in behind the jug on top of the motor - brass hex with a single wire out the top, try that one first. They are notorious for failing and sticking on, the replacement is $8. if you pull this wire off but the light is still on then its from antifreeze temp sensor, so then you can determine whether or not the bike is really over heated or the sensor is bad. there are two antifreeze sensors - one turns on the fan, the other turns on the light, track the wires to be sure you got the right one.

HOLY CRAP! Stop riding if the light is on. Even the manual tell you that when changing the oil if the light doesn't go off STOP the motor and prime the pump. The last time I heard someone say they ignored the little red light it cost them a new motor.

I would guess it is probably your oil sensor, as this seems to be the case more so than not. Was your fan on a lot?
My light stopped working (still havnt tracked it down yet... the LED is working, and the wiring seems to be ok and grounded) but I think I may do away with the light (or at least just remount it and not worry about it not working) because I have the two gauges hooked up now.

Yeah on the 02 you have to bleed it. There is a big screw inside where the oil filter is. Open that and bump the starter until oil comes out. Tighten back up and put everything back together and see what happens.
After you do what hightower said!

Just a thought here and please dont take this the wrong way. Go to E-Bay , do a search for DS650 and look for CD-Rom service manual. It will cost you about 10 duckets and could save you hundreds. They are really nice to have and very informative.

My fan is coming on alot more often now so i believe it is the high antifreeze temp. I have already replaced the oil sensor once. What can I do abuot the high antifreeze/coolant temp? When i changed the oil I drained the antifreeze/coolant and the refilled it.

I just looked and it was a little low on coolant. So I filled it back up, started it, then the light went off. Well I let it idle for a few minutes while i put the front plastice back on and then i heard the fan kick on and then saw the oil light kick on. I looked and the coolant was still at a normal level. Any ideas? All of the hoses are on snug and tight. So im not sure if the coolant might just not be flowing right or what.

nothing strange about the fan kicking on after idling, because the radiator gets no air, therefore does very little to cool the glycol/H20. I have never really had a problem with changing oil (have never had to bleed my system) so I am not sure if it is normal for the light to come on/off... I would think if it was the oil needing to be bled that it would come on and stay on.
also, did you try doing the things hightower suggested? pulling the wire on the oil sensor would be the easiest check, as it takes only a few seconds to pull it off and see if the light status changes.
