Default axle and bearings..

My son came home early to go to a funeral.

The procedure for tightening the rear changed when they went to the aluminum, 1 inch shorter swingarm.

The procedure for an 01 is not the same as for an 04. I will check my manual and get back to you.

Default axle and bearings..

guys, what i was wondering was, when u have installed the repacked bearings and seals in the carrier, should u slide the axle back in dry or can the axle have a little grease on it so it will slide much easier into the bearings?? i think it will be a very snug fit because my axle didn't come out real easy. i had to bang it a bunch with a block of wood and hammer. oh, can i use degreaser to clean the old bearings and then repack with new grease??

Don't tell anyone, but I used a pipe wrench on mine.
The whole thing is easy once you try.
Wrong! I have an 04 and there are specific details about how to preload the bearings in the manual by using the "crowfoot" tool and a 1/2" drive torque wrench. I don't have the manual with me now but I believe it says to preload the nut to 69 Ft lbs, then back it off and reapply the torque to something like 24 ft lbs......You need a manual!
I have a manual, thank you. The rear changed in 04. It is different. I guess it has a different kind of adjusting nut. My manual says for my 03, preload 97ft lbs. relax nut, spin axle a little bit and re-tighten nut to 35ft lbs. It even goes on to say to recheck by then spinning a few more times then re-install pin, re-torque to 35ft lbs again.
I hope this helps.

I wasn't trying to insult your intelligence with my comment about getting a manual. My point was eRo has an 04 DS 650 viper red, not an 03 or 02 etc. etc. So people making suggestions based on their own year model not his and as you know 03's are not the same as 04's. We all need to be careful when making suggestions that we pay closer attention to the model year the individual is asking the question on......

Now I'll go back into the shadows....‹(•¿•)›

The torque specs are the same. The axle housing is the same. Bearings are the same. The preload nut is different.
