Default Question on exhaust!

My question is, does replacing a stock can with only an aftermarket one do the trick as far as HP and performance gains, or should I replace the whole system including the header. I could be wrong here but it seems like replacing the header is only for aesthetics???Fathers day is coming up and daddy wants a new exhaust so any help you guys could give would be appreciated. Oh, one last thing, any thoughts or experiences with different brands and jet kits would help too, cause I assume i will have to re-jet it.This is an 05'DS and is pretty much stock except for some electrical bolt-ons. Thanks Gentleman!!!!!

Default Question on exhaust!

I don't own either but being on this forum since forever (it feels like), RWR is the way to go for motors that are built if I recall there better from like 6k rpm up over stock or full blowen drag pipe. if your not gonna go bigger on bore ,cams ect. then the stock header and can (w/end cap) performs very well. but it does have its limits. some that have put time in on different slip ons like HMF. again this is from what Ive read in the past. some one else might want to chime in on this.

I see youve got a tip on yours and this was an option for me as well. I honestly just didnt know if the tip would make any difference as far as performance. Did it? I am on a budget as far as the wife goes and if aftermarket exhaust tips perform as well as a slip on then that may be the way to go.

Default Question on exhaust!

I think it was 222 that told me if you stay with the stock bore you don't need to replace the header. I also heard the same thing from a HMF rep who had the opportunity to sell the entire system but opted to give his opinion and say keep the stock header just get the slip-on.... HMF doesn't sell an entire system you might say; well thats true but he could have recommended aftermarket headers and didn't.

I had a FMF slip on and I now have a HMF slip-on but since I haven't ridden since I got it I can't tell you what the seat of the pants difference is.

Default Question on exhaust!

I put a Mr HP tip on my stock exhaust along with a free flowing filter and re-jetted. The power gains were great. Go here and check it out. Some good info. http://www.hpresearch.net/exhaust.html

Default Question on exhaust!

Thanks, now heres the real question. I have very little time to ride and I dont want to spend half of it working bugs out of a carb. Is re-jetting going to create a situation where I get a quirky, unreliable bike like I have heard from some folks. I am very capable of turnin bolts and workin on a bike but carbs are something that I have no experience in. Fast is great but reliability is better for me.

Dser thanks for the tip
That end cap is for me. Does it require a change in air flow as well or just jetting.

No reliabilty doesnt go out the window with rejetting. The hardest part about the rejetting is getting the brass bolts off the first time. Once you have them off go to a local bolt shop and replace the brass bolts with some allen head bolts. Makes jetting changes simple when you decide to do other mods to the motor.

Yeah I learned all about those wonderful bress screws when I put my twist throttle kit on. Had to resort to the vice grips on two outa three. The hex heads are a great idea, Thanks!
