Torque VS Horspower?
#2
Torque is probably slightly more important than HP when it comes to dune climbing. If your HP comes on at too high of RPM, it will be difficult to reach that point without enough torque up a steep dune climb. This is especially true with a 4 stroke motor. You can have all the HP in the world, but if you cant get to the RPM where the HP numbers are, and maintain those numbers into the next shift, there's really no point - its not usable horsepower. One of the problems with a Dyno is that it's diffucult to match the torque numbers you need to a specific hill. Unless your builder knows your motor, your hill, and tried lots of cams and different profiles, you'll simply be hunting and pecking.

When you say "dune climbing" are you talking about strictly hill shooting racing or all around dunning which of course includes dune climbing?
I built my motor for all around dunning, its got a very flat torque curve. I can dune all day in 3rd gear, the torque is there when ever you need it.
If it was practical I would throw a small turbo diesel in there! My druamax diesel truck has about twice as much torque then HP, thats what allows it to climb grades fully loaded with out down shifting out of over drive.

Torque really helps in the sand...the more torque you have, the easier it is for the HP to take over. I ran an FMF and DMC exhaust, then switched to LTE duals that have much added in the torque department and now it rips in the dunes...
