The stock clutch has a steel that goes in first, so I'm a guessing that this should have a steel in first.

Yes sir, put them in exactly the way the factory came out but remember the first and last friction plates are the greeenish ones. And the last plate goes in the shorter grove by itself.

I have the HPR 9 disk clutch kit I plan to install tomorrow. There were two green plates and seven orange plates. It also came with 9 steel plates. They were shipped in this order:

Green...Orange...Orange...Orange...Orange...Orange ...Orange...Orange...Green

I called Richards Recreation and they told me the green friction plates were the first and last to be installed. Note that one of the friction plates in the set has a smaller notch then the rest. It's easy to see if you align them all up.

Green Friction - Smaller notch to fit in offset position in clutch basket.

That covers the 9 friction plates and 9 steel plates.

chiknhawk: Is the last install a steel plate?

Doh, answered my own question when I re-reviewed the service manual.

I don't mean to answer for chiknhawk but the answer is no.
The first thing to go into the clutch basket is a steel plate. And the last is a fiber Just reverse the list you posted and you have it.

After looking at the service manual (again), I saw the correct order. I'm going to edit that post so it's correct. I don't want the wrong information out there.

OK then since you decided to edit your post and correct the order then All I will say is. Disregard the part where in my earlier post I mention it was backwards...lol... I think everyone knows the order now anyways.

It's easy to get turned around on these things . Good input for the weekend (actually quarterly for me) mechanic.

The job is done and the HPR clutch kit is performing well. I'm curious how it'll perform after a few rides. It's a little difficult to hit neutral. I suspect that'll work it's way out.
