How to handle litter bugs
#1
Last year at Gordon's wells I was at the drags with all my friends and family a bunch of guys in a truck were drinking beer and throwing the cans on the ground I had to bite my lip every time I saw them throw a can on the ground. As they were leaving I walked over and started putting the cans in the back of the truck . The driver asked me what the F--K I was doing I told him I was putting them were they belong. They started getting roudy and I thaught for sure I was in for a good scrap but fortunatly for me alot of the guys that were with me are big boys to and when they all walked over they got back in the truck and left.
The last thing I want to do is get in a fight at the dunes I go there to have fun with the family. Anybody have any suggestions how to handle it a little better.

I always try dialogue first and then move onto any other means necessary to get them to comply...if they want to act like animals then you have to treat them like animals..

Good move on throwing the cans in the back of the truck.
A lot of the guys I go camping/riding with think the fire pit is the community garbage can whenever we go camping. I always ask at the end of the trip who's going to clean out all the beer cans. Of course I never get any volunteers and it usually ends up being me. Its kind of sad because their kids are going to grow up to be the same way.

You will always have those who don’t care but often people just don’t think of the consequences of their actions.
I worked for the Forest Service for several years and you would not believe the amount of trash left behind by people that I had to carry out. Nevertheless, when people are confronted for the most part they are willing to comply with your request to remove their garbage. Usually it’s nothing more then an oversight or what I heard allot was that there were no trash receptacles to dispose of it and they didn’t want to carry it home...
I know personally the way I get the trash picked up in my camp especially when there’s a large group is tell the kids to collect all the trash and the top three to collect the most get $5.00 each. Often I found kids going to other campsites trying to find more trash so they could win! Of course this idea generally doesn’t work when there’s no children…..lol
Bottom line is when you confront someone about leaving trash you have to be cordial and explain why it is so necessary to maintain a clean area. If you **** them off all they’ll do is drive down the road and throw it out the window anyway. As hard as it is to accept there will be those times you will have to haul it out for the sake of everyone….

It always amazes me at the amount of crap some people take camping yet they can't seem to pack a single freakin trash bag. SOrry but not having any place to put your trash is not an excuse. You pack it in you pack it out!

Sounds like you were dealing with some bonafide W.T. I'd suggest roiding up, throw back a couple of red bulls, then confront them with drunkedness rage demaning their asses to pick-up after themselves.......If that doesn't work, just do what you did.

I know exactly what you mean. Somehow, I am the jerk for pointing it out??
I went riding with some guys who threw all the bottles! down. I freaked. They said I was being a d ic k! Yeah, me! I didn't know what to do except pick them up as we went along and they thought it was funny. I really had to eat some crow that day. Worst ride ever.
When we got back to their house, I threw all the bottles out on the lawn and left. Never will I ride with them again. I am not the di c k.

Thanks for the replies.
I just don't get it ? When I go riding I love to go to places that are nice and clean I don't like riding in a landfill. Everytime we go camping, fishing, hunting or riding we clean the camp spotless so next time we show up it is as beautiful as the first.
Well if you guys see me at the dunes scrapping with some of these people because they litter and I am being an A$$ for asking them to clean up after themselves feel free to step in and help me out. :0)
Thanks Travis.
