Cant keep up with a Z400

Hey DSlider,
After the Dyno tuning I am set at a
165Main and 47.5 Pilot 1st clip on needle 3 turns on the fuel screw.
FYI.
I was refering to the 35 stock horse that the DWRag guys did when they Dynoed an 05DS for the Turbo upgrade.
But I agree the # seemed a little low.

Oldman has some good recommendations on getting every last bit out of the stock carb, but if I were you I would focus on trouble shooting your current tuning issue before going and adding more variables into the picture.

Well me myself I think the z400 is a very strong bike to roll right off the floor and on the trails.I can only speak on the z400 side just because i have never rode anything from bombardier[truth be know i'm a yamaha guy myself].

What they really meant was it is only down 10% compared to the bone stock pipe! The quiet series HMF makes less power on the dyno than the stock pipe. Take the quiet core out and watch it come alive.

i have an 05 ds with a w/b e-series exhaust and nerfs and my friend has a stock 450r and in the first 3 gears he has about 1 1/2 bike lengths on me and i was wondering if i should get a 15 tooth front ... also i am going up to 22 rears should i go ahead and get a 14 tooth to compensate for them??

stock front sprocket is 16 tooth...obviously. Stock tires are 20 inch. If you go up to 22 inch rear tires, running a 15 tooth front sprocket will be almost equivelent to the stock setup. running a 14 with 22's is almost liek a 15 with 20's....get the picture? Put a 15 tooth on, and see if the results of the race are similar to pre mods, if it's worse, major tuning problem. If it's the same, minor tuning problem, or as 222 has said, lose the quiet core. If you do better than before the mods, then it was definately a gearing issue.

With the 15 tooth and stock tires I went through the gears so fast it sucked...5th was like 3rd. Now its just right with the 22" Razrs. It seems to have put my gearing back where it was. Running a 14 tooth would seem like a wrong move. However, if you like the shift alot and dont want top speed....go for it.
Seems you have something else going on, along with your gearing wrong.
When I was running completely stock other than an end cap (wide open) and a 175 jet in the stock carb I ran my friend with an 04 Z400 with a Yosh $$$$$ pipe. When running the hill at the dunes, going into 3rd I would pull hard past him. We are the same weight. We would switch quads and have the same results, so it wasnt the driver. He would always get the hole shot, cuz I would trench and not hook up. I have many pics of the hill if you want to see the difference.
Your slip on being quiet makes me think its a little more restrictive and a 165 jet should be closer if your at a higher (2640ft?) elevation. If its running "fat" it will be a slug out of the hole and the gearing will be another lag.
Its just my guess at it......

I thought the quiet core was built into the QRS series pipes from HMF. You don't have the option to remove them like you do on their other pipes. He is pretty much stuck with what he has unless he take the pipe off and replaces it.
Bio,
WIth the stock carb you need a vacuum to open the slide. Taking off the air box lid or removing the air box completly kills your vacuum and power. This has been discussed in great length in other posts. You best bet is leaving the box and lid in place with the stock carb.

222, as DSengineer says, the QRS does not have a removable quiet core. Have you or MrHP dynoed the QRS?
Mike, at HMF reccomended me this pipe cause it is legal to run where the 102db limit rule exist, and that it only looses 10% vs de sport series.
Isnt 165 main jet (Mikuni) too small for 3000ft (90F)?
Thanks
