Cant keep up with a Z400
your even higher up in elevation than I guessed. I would think you have even higher levels you ride in around there.....unless you live on the peak! I used to live in 2700ft and had my end cap with a stock carb and 175 jet. When I went up in the mountains around 1500 feet higher it would just start to crap out and blacken my 6 pack rack from the rich mix. I would take off my air box lid, and it would get better. I noticed it acting up when I was full throttle, so its not just a needle ajustment. With an end cap its litterally an open exhaust system. Now with you being at a 3000ft and having more of a restrictive pipe than I have I would think that 170 to 165 is closer to what you need. Just to over state what I am saying, your up where there is less air and too much fuel is the result from that. In car drag racing, 1/4 mile track times are ALWAYS slower in higher elevations.
You need to play with the needle for your elevation anyway and most likely the source of your problem. I try 2 steps either way at first just to see the reaction.....if its loading up you need to go the other way on the clip. And if its already lean it will really run worse with it 2 steps leaner. Test ride it, dont adjust it and go on a ride for an hour. PAY ATTENTION to the white washer location in the assembly. Oh and get a couple allen head screws to replace the 2 soft headed lid screws.
Look at your spark plug.......its the way to dial it in. Black & fuel soaked is obviously rich.
Lean is great for throttle resonse idle to 4k but top end will chop off. Of course it will burn a valve or piston or overheat if its too lean. So I understand your concern. Just keep in mind that you have less air up there so your a tad different than many other riders in lower elevation.
Get the 15 tooth, you will be much happier. Its cheap and will serioulsy help your 300ft time.
