When I would press the start button the starter would free-spin. So I took the cover off to inspect. What I found was their was a tooth missing on the gear that the starter contacts. I also noticed that the Big gear on the "flywheel" just spins...shouldnt it grab? What would cause this?
Also does anybody know the part number of the gear that contacts the starter?

I not for sure but that big gear shoud only spin freely in one dorection. That big gear is called the "Stating Gear". It runs on a "Clutch-Sprag". This acts as basicly a one way clutch. One direction it shoud free spin, the other direction should turn over the motor. If it spins in both direction, which I suspect it does due to the problems you have stated, you have problems. This "clutch" in on the stater side.

It as though it is bolted, looking at the exploded diagram of an '01 model. Yours may be different. I would sugest you get a service manual. The are on ebay on CD all the time. Sorry re-read your post. there is no "flywheel". The gear apears to be under the stator. All that has to come off to get to it.

I wasnt sure if it was flywheel that why I put Ouotations...I could buy the CD then I would have that in a week...Then get the numbers..Then go to a dealer...I am sure the parts are weeks away.. I was looking to be able to have part numbers in hand...Make a call somewhere or go down to the dealer and know exactly what I needed..

First of all you have to get a flywheel puller. Then next you have to replace the sprag clutch which is around $96.00 Then you will have to replace any bent gears or missing tooth gears. Most likely you sprag clutch damaged the two surfaces that it rides on. These parts are the money parts. Here is the best place to buy the parts and the puller.

Ron Woods Racing wanted $276.00 for the sprag clutch. I got it at AS for I think $96.00. The motor on our DS is the same motor on the BMW Funduro 650.

Oh yeah if your sprag clutch did damage the two surfaces on the other gear expect to spend between $500 to $600.00 dollars to fix the Quad.

You didn't happen to be running a pro com CDI ?

Hope this helps and good luck. D
