Hello all,
I know there are plenty of topics on performance but I want to know about performance on this particular quad. I just bought a 2004 Baja X today and rode it. I love this thing alot. So much of a better ride than anything else. It's got plenty of mid-range and top-end power but lacks a little the first 1500-2000 rpms. Is this due to the factory retarding the timing? What can I do to gain this monstrous power down low without emptying my wallet. I really hate to put an aftermarket exhaust on because I like the quiet sound. Will a rev box cure this? If so what is recommended? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If gearing is an answere what company can you get sprockets from at a reasonable price.

Are you riding on dirt or sand? 20" stockers or 22" tires? DS650's want to idle at almost 2000rpm so make sure your idle speed isn't too low. A 15 tooth counter sprocket is a good thing to lighten load on the motor unless you want all out top speed. Look up Oldmanracing's stock carb adjustments on this forum, your pilot jet might be inappropriate.
Good Luck!

I'm doing alot of dirt riding. Going to put 22" tires on. I want to have good 3rd gear response for hill climbing. What comes stock on the front sprocket? 1st, 2nd gear are fine just seems like it needs more in 3rd down low. How fast are these things top speed anyway?

My '05 had a 16/40 front rear sprocket combo. If you find that slightly lower gears works good, you will have to add a couple of teeth to the rear sprocket when you go to 22" to compensate.
FYI the higher quality CDI's or Ignition's maintain stock timing curve from 0 - 1500 rpm approx. The reason is to reduce stress on certain components like the sprag clutch, flywheel, starter bendix and crank. The cheap aftermarket CDI's like Big Gun, Procomm and the not so cheap like RWR advance the timing an additional 7 degrees from 0 - redline. When you stall or have a false start, you will hear this awful mechanical kickback that gets worse as the sprag clutch absorbs more and more of these impacts and gets sloppier teeth. I know MSD Ignition solves this and I think Vortex does to but neither will give you more advance to counter your low engine speed lack of power.
What elevation are you riding at? I think you must have a carburation issue.

If you go to a 22 in wheel try a 15 tooth front sprocket. You can get them at
rockey mountain
I was looking for that 3rd gear grunt and found it with a hmf pipe.I know you said
you dont want to change. But it sure helps. If you want to spend some money get
a aftermarket carb.
Sorry my link is not working anyone know why.

Do you need your spark arrestor where you ride? If not, I would be inclined to surgeocally remove it from the stock end cap, go to a 15 tooth front sprocket and install a ProFlow filter with the airbox lid off then re-jet accordingly. I think you will see a noticable difference.

sab,
i have an 04 x also...i went with an endcap and K&N filter and rejetted....the change in low end and throttle response was day and night...i had a huge poop eating grin on for the first few wks...sometimes i still cant beleive it!
if you go 22's you better drop a tooth in the front to keep the low end
and i beleive we run 83-86mph stock
