Hi Ganggreen,
The 04 was the year they made the bike a bit smaller and a bit lighter with some alumnum parts (SwingArm and UpperA arms, plastic head light) with a shorter axel and swing arm.
It wasent by much ... only like 1.5 inches. From what I read the riders complained about it in the (DirtRag Mag) then the following year they bitched how it was to short and narrow ? ... go figure ... those guys are like politicians.
Any how
I have the O4 model and would like to see it a bit longer my self but only for the dunes ...as I am useually wide open across the tops of some of those big bowls ! I am not a wheelie guy at all but prefer the tighter turning radius.
Not absoultely needed or worth the money IMHO but would like test ride it and the difference. Maybe for drag racing 80 hp it might be needed !
But O4 was definately the model to get as they went back to steel parts on 05.

Actually, my '05 came with an aluminum cast swingarm that was just as light as the +4 chromolly tube swingarm I installed. My understanding was that '05 was the best year because '04 had some bad ring kits hit the market before they solved the problem. '05 is the last year you can get the standard DS650 without buying the x which has all that extra stuff and makes the unit $7k instead of $6k. My 2000 DS sidehilled better and was better for tree shoots because of the longer swingarm (1.25"), a little harder to wheelie though. My '05 steers much better than my '00 ever dreamed of which is great for tight trails.
Good luck!

Thankyou for all of your replies. I think I am going to give the ds a shot. As soon as I find a good one for a reasonable price I'll be sure to let you guys know how I like it, and from what you are saying it sounds like I will. Where do you guys find all of these aftermarket parts for the ds I can't really find to much?
