The springs and retainers are for the stock style "shim over bucket" type valve spring setup. Better than stock, but not nearly as good as the "shim under bucket" converson kit such as the web kit you mentioned. With shim unders, you can rev a lot higher than stock and even the upgraded springs with less fear of floating the valves.

Also cams with huge lift and duration (high rpm race cams and such) The shim under bucket kit is almost always essential to prevent the valves from floating, shims poping out of the top of the bucket, and you don't wanna know what comes next.....

If you plan ever run very high rpm, utalize a rev limiterless cdi, or rin race cams, the shim unders are the way to go off the bat, no point in buying the springs only to turn around and have to buy the kit anyways.

shim under is not necessary.

i run woods springs with a stock shim under the base for extra seat pressure. with stock valves and web 109's i can rev to 11,000 without a problem. standard pami springs do not have enough seat pressure for high RPM.

i know a DS that pulled 13,500RPM on the dyno with a similar setup.

isn't the shim under kit also a good bit lighter than the stock shim over setup? I didn't weigh the setup, but the stock buckets were thicker walled than my shim under buckets, and the stock shims are like the size of a quarter and the shim under shims are like a dime. don't know what its worth, but its gotta be worth something or else titanium retainers are a waste of time too.

and then there is also a little more security, for what its worth anyway, in knowing that if you do drop a valve the shims cannot get out to bounce around in the top of the head and tear up your cams. the chamber side of the head may be screwed, but at least the cams may live to breath again.
