Do you want to run racegas or would you rather stay with pump gas?

I WOULD LIKE TO STAY ON PUMP GAS THAN I RUN RACE GAS FOR THE DRAGS . DOES A GOOD PISTON INCREASE HP IN LOW END

Crazyds,

You should run the octane that your piston recommends - all the time. Race gas isnt just for races, its all about matching the octane to the compression of your piston. The higher the compression, the more Horsepower, and the more octane you will have to run - again, all the time.

Typical Piston Compressions ...

11.5:1
12:1
13:1
14:1

If race gas is something you dont want to run, then I would stick with the stock piston. The 11.5:1 piston can be run on 98 octane. I know some people have run it on less, but they are usually at higher elevations.

Caps off please.

If you raise the compression, you will make more power bottom to top. If you are running an aftermarket cdi that adds additional timing advance, I think 11.5:1 is max on pump gas. If you go to 12:1 I would run a 50/50 mix of pump gas and racegas. 13:1 you need 110 octane. 14:1 I think they are running 114 or 118 octane.

When my jetting was correct, I never found much benefit to running racegas in my lower compression bikes. The only time I noticed a difference was when I was already running a touch rich. The racegas has a higher oxygen count which caused whatever mix I was running to lean out a bit. Theoretically you can make a little more power if you set your jetting up right for race gas but the difference is so slim, most of us never have our jetting dialed in that close on any given day.

I ran the 11.5:1 for a long time and ran it both with pump and race gace and didn't notice any difference in power. However, I did notice it ran cooler on hot days. On those hot days I did run race gas and my fan didn't come on as much as it did with pump gas. Not sure if it really did run cooler, but it was someithing I just noticed.

That is interesting. I to have noticed that I run cooler with racegas. I would imagine that if you were bordering on a lean condition and you bumped up to racegas that you could potentially run hotter. But that is just a guess.

Hey Crazy,

I noticed a big difference when we installed the 11.5:1 in my old DS.

I think you will like it. Are you doing it yourself or are you paying labor also? I spent about $2k before I was able to pull w/ a piped YFZ450 on a race hill. There are a lot of guys w/ DS's who say their's was just as quick stock as a piped 450 but mine wasen't. I had to go 13:1 and a race head with the 46mm lectron, then I could pull most of them. Wait a minute, that is almost $3k w/ labor. Oh well, I like how sore my butt is not at the end of the day on my DS. At my age, a 450 is out of the question.

Pic off '05 and older TRX450r's. They should be easy pickings with your new setup.
