On a 2000, YES - Absolutely you should do it!

Take off the oil filter cover and then pull out the oil filter.

There is a flat head screw in the back and you'll want a really big screw driver and a crescent wrench. I put the wrench on the hex part of the shaft of the screwdriver so I can twist with it while applying inward pressure on the screwdriver itself so as not to wear off the edges of the screw. PLEASE use a properly sized screw driver. If you use one that is too small you'll mess up the screw and things will go to that hot place down under.

If you ever pull the cylinder off your bike, get the newer oil line angled piece that comes out of the top of the engine by the cam chain tensioner. That I think it is Zink Plated angled piece on the newer bikes has a vent line that runs up to the oil res. and I think this avoids air that can become trapped in the lines on the 2000 model. Unfortunately, you can't remove that piece without the head and cylinder off the engine.

Is that enough info???

Oh, do a search on "Oil Screen" . You better clean that thing too. It is on the bottom of the oil res. pull off the hose then unscrew the fitting. There is a screen on this line that if dirty will starve you engine of oil!!! If you've never done it you better do it!

Yes, with the kill switch off, bump the starter a few times until oil comes out from that screw Dune Me told you about. Take care as he said or you'll be sorry.
Do not over-tighten after oil comes out. Stinks it makes such a mess when doing this procedure. I try and jam a rag down under there to catch most of the oil.
It's an easy procedure. Just a little messy :-)
