if you ride in dusty area's or mud and water i wouldnt do it....airbox off is more for a direct mount on a newcarb..

I put a Ron Woods stage 1 on my DS. pipe, rev box & 46mm flatslide carb. origionally i used a UNI 2 stage filter on the carb, no box. The weight of the carb/filter combinned with vibration caused the carb/filter to fall off. after this prob happened i talked to my dyno tune guy and we decided to put the factory air box back in using a K&N with outerware, no lid. this gained ne 3.5 hp on the dyno. my opion is taking the lid off helps the flow, but if you are worried about debree in the box then you can use an Outerware box lid cover (don't know a part #)these elastic around the lip of the box and really do work. I ride in the woods, desert, & dunes. because of my mods & setup i do not use a cover or the intake hoses (it is very dusty in Arizona)& have had no ill affects from it. When changing any setup like air intake etc. I feel a dyno run is a must. I used to set up all my own tuning and i will tell you this.. the dyno was the best $ i spent, i gained 11 hp with the carb & a tune. all total i push 62hp with my DS. many shops which have dynos will check the set up for around $25 (no adjusting) many are hp junkies and advice is usually free.
