Comfort, suspension, handling and power should be your major concerns when buying a new machine. Top speed is something that you probably wont use much. Think about how your going to use the bike, I dont see woods and roads being a place that you can do 80+mph. The ds is a great high speed cruiser and has an awsome suspension for stock. Think Bombardier claims it has a top speed of 90 or 91. I think its probably more like around 85mph. That has alot to do with the weight of the rider. That being said, on my current setup, gearing @ 16 40 on 22' tires I can pull 91mph (on my trailtech + or - a few mph) before it scares the **** out of me and I let up on the throttle and Button!

I know alot guys are frustrated with the whole alter ego guys that are trying to stir up trouble all time. Im tired of it myself. This forum used to be a great place for friends to meet and help each other with problems. It seems to be going down hill really fast. Its really to bad that its starting to look like the yamaha forum with a bunch of kids talking smack to one another. I have met, rode with, helped out, been helped and made some lifetime friends on this forum. I think its worth the effort to answer any legitimate post put on here! I remember when I first joined, The guys were always ready to help and offer up alot of good ideas and opinions. What happen to those guys? Seems like anyone with less than 200 posts gets slammed. Give them a break we can use more legit members on here with honest opinions and ideas.

A top speed! I didn't know DS's had a top speed. Dam Imma have to look in the manual again. sigh!

ok, lets get things straight..........if you do a simple search in the yamaha forum you will find that the top speed of a ds650 (built or not) is approximately 28.5 mph on a downhill slope with the wind to your back at 9,000 ft elevation. its that simple. hope this helps

Next thing he'll be asking is what the loudest exhaust ever for the ds is . The Bkaster is pretty quick, but you may want to try the yamoto.

I have had my bone stock DS up 198 MPH... yup I was racing in the Datona 500 last week. Would have won the damn race if Tony Stewart had not put me into the wall.


The fastest My bike has ever gone was 90 MPH in the back of my truck going down hill with a Tail wind ! trying to get to the dunes in 1.5 hours with no speeding tickets !

Racing Quad covers a lot of different types of racing ?
Like others have stated he who has the most useable power on tap at the right place and right time with skill, experance and a little luck uesually wins the race. Seldom are TOP end speeds ever reached to get to the finish line.

 

if your big i suggest the ds if your medium try a different quad
I wouldn`t say that even a raptor is as fast in the top speed
how ever if you need a comparison a honda 400ex maxs out at about fourth gear on the ds
It seems that it is all about the pull to get to top speed with the ds

 

Mine was gpsd at 70 1mile out 1mile back.That was a top speed on gps.on a gravel road.
I thought there was something wrong.Turned out gearing,tires,and pipe have alot to do
with top speed.My friends banshee ran 73 on the same trip.My other friend hit 82 on his
cr250.Those are the best numbers that i have personally saw.On the trails here in MI i
will most likely never see 4th gear.

 

Stock i did 74 mph...after the 22 inch rears i pulled just over 83 mph on the gps on the highway at the rev limiter.....the ds comes geared allot lower than it can pul.........l it can pull a little bit over 80mph with just a sprocket change and a long road or highway....... With some simple mods you can gain a bit more.

 

Kind of funny this thread came up. My buddy just bought a new YFZ450 (actually I posted this but it relates) he thinks he bought the fastest production quad, whether it is or not is up for debate I guess but I passed him drag racing each time I hit fourth gear. Anyway, thats not why I responded. He asked me how fast I thought our two quads went, I told him probably around 75 stock......he was like "WHAT, I thought they'd go about 100mph".

He seemed quite surprised how fast the DS was considering how much it weighs. I rode his YFZ, it is fast, a little on the small side for my taste but that DS Rotax engine seems deeper, yeah its 200 cc's bigger but just feels like there is a lot more there.
