Default Stalling after large puddle

I bought a stock 03 ds last november and have had many excelent outings with it. Starts right up and plenty of power. Although i now notice low torque at lower rps, my wife thanks you guys in the forum for bringing up new ways for me to spend even more money

The last couple of time we went out the ds would stall after going through a large puddle.

The water goes high enough to soak me up to the shoulders. THen, after a quarter or half mile it sputters then stalls. THe first time I was trying to pop the clutch going down a hill. This didn't work and the thought I was out of gas or on a downward incline (which would leave the fuel in the front of the tank) so I put the petcock in reserve. It started but I thought this was unusual so I put it back in the reqular position and it worked the rest of the ride. This area is around 1000 feet above sea level. It started after a few minutes.

Today we were riding in an area called pine valley which varies between 3000 and 4000 feet. The last time we went there was some definite sputtering because of the altitude. But after going through a large hole It sputtered and died. I checked the air box which had some water but nothing big. I put it in reserve and that didn't work. After about 5 it started up and was OK. it still sputtered a bit but I think it was the altitude.

I'm not sure how to trouble shoot this.
I'm thinking of parking it in the driveway running and shooting water all over it. iIcluding up between the plastics and the gas tank which is where the air intakes are located. I don't know if water got up this far out on the trail.

I suppose it could be electrical and the water evaporates quickly near the engine.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks again to everyone in the forum. I spend hours reading all the topics and wish I had about 1g to spend on upgrades. I did come across oldmanracing carb mods. This is a great low cost and really informative topic.

You might be getting a little water around the spark plug boot. I put some silcone around mine and now it dosen't do that.

That's a good idea to spray it down with a hose in your driveway, that will tell you were the problem is. I have not run into this problem on my DS, but would suspect "muddirtsand" is correct. I cant imagine your airbox letting that much water in to cause it to stall.

Hope it is an easy find. Water could be getting in any number of electrical connections and causing the problem. The electrical connections have rubber seals that should keep out the water. When you spray the DS down look at some of the connections for condensation in them. A car wash might work better as you can hit the DS with a little more pressure like when you hit a puddle at speed. If electrical, when it does not run, you can check your plugs and see if you are gettin fire. If getting fire it could be a fuel and/or air issue. Good luck
