Realistic gains with nitrous?
First off i will admit that i am back and forth on wether or not a nitrous system would work well for me and with that in mind i have some questions that hopefully can be answered. Some of you may have read that i recently had my 2003 Baja built around a stock bore and although i am very pleased with its performance i am never satisfied(sound familiar?) so i am considering a nitrous system. If i cant make the gains with a nitrous system on my stock bore then i will purchase another DS and build a big bore but with the cost involved i would rather add nitrous to my stock bore.If i add a nitrous system to my stock bore and use a 25-30 shot what kind of a gain in quad lengths should i realize in 300 feet?If i go as high as 30-40 shot ?My piston is a HPR with 11.5:1 compression that should handle the nitrous well enough and i have the HPR HR3 cams so i am confident that nitrous will work with my motor.I am 230 lbs and although i am always right in there with the fastest four strokes and most of the two strokes i could use a little help when drag racing,so is nitrous a good option?Randall at HPR has gave me the confidence that my build will handle the nitrous i just want to make sure the real world gains will be worth the cost.

sandbomber-That is good to hear.I am thinking that adding nitrous to my stock bore build would be a good way to make up some of the ground i lose by being heavier than most riders.Ron (DSNUT)got a chance to ride my HPR stock bore yesterday at Florence and i think he was impressed,i know i am.I dont need to make up that much ground to be running where i want to be so this should do it.I want to make sure that i can gain at least 4 or 5 quad lengths in a 300 foot race before i commit to a nitrous system and from what i have researched so far that should not be a problem.

Realistic gains with nitrous?
You guys are telling me what i want to hear.So it is sounding like a 20 shot would be more than enough for what i want?I didnt realize that this stock bore motor would pull as hard as it does and now that i have a few rides on it i am starting to get excited thinking about its potential with nitrous. My first purchase should probably be a swingarm since i dont think that it would work out too well to use a nitrous system without one. This is really adding up$$$And to think just yesterday i told the wife that the Baja was done.LOL.

Mike,
The only thing I'd like to add is this thought on how nitrous is used. When we think nitrous, we automatically think drag racing. Now, thats not a bad thing at all. However, the sled industry used nitrous in several ways; Drag Racing (hill climbing) and Boondocking. Boondocking is a type of riding that is more technical like going through a forest and riding through standing and fallen trees in varying depths of snow. Using nitrous while duning opens up a whole new concept of riding that most havent even considered. I've been experimenting by using nitrous in more technical dune riding and finding how much I enjoy it. Of course, I dune drag with it, but a 25HP tap is a great boost when you need it to raise your RPMs and maintain speed in certain situations. Also, when the sand gets soft and heavy, and wheels start sinking, a nitrous tap is all you need to get out of situations like that. I've even tried it when cresting a dune - anytime when a hit of horsepower is needed.
Of course, there will always be those that love nitrous in flat or dune drags. But thats only part of the picture.

Mark.Good point about the alternative uses for nitrous but i would bet that most are going to use it for drag racing which would be my main use for it.As far as overall power for duning i have that now with my HPR stock bore.Chuck put together a strong runner that will only get better with tweaking.I am very uneducated in the use of nitrous and i have a couple of questions. In a 300 foot race would i be able to utilize nitrous right off the line or is it generally used after initial take off?Would i have to run higher octane when using nitrous or does it work fine with a octane that is proper for my compression such as in my case 93 pump premium with 11.5:1?How is the install on the Boss system for difficulty?

I'd highly recommend either the Boss or Boondocker brand nitrous kits. I've used both of these on sleds and when the snow melts, they get swapped over to the quads. Great results and easy tuning with both of these kits. I also agree that 20hp would be a solid kick in the pants on a factory DS engine! Good luck!
