Default DS650, changes since intro and intro year?

Hi guys,
Sure someone in here can enlighten me.
I am looking at a 2000 DS650 this weekend, wondering if this is the first year they came out?
What changes have occured since the release of this model?
What problem areas should I look for on this bike?
A buddy just bought an 06 DS650, will the 2000 run with it, or are there alot of changes?
I do lotsa field and ditch banging, with some gravel pits and a little mx mixed in, LOTS of hillclimbing, no really tight trails yet though. Is this bike good for climbing hills?
What is the weight difference between these and say a raptor or z400?

Thanks.

I don't know too much about the differences, but I do know they have a different oil filter and a different swing arm. Sorry I could not be more helpful.

A friend of mine bought a 03, I have a 00, we raced on flat gravel road and I beat him. We took him to LS Utah and I beat him dragging up sand mountain. As for hillclimbs, I haven't found anything I can't climb on mine yet. It does weigh about 50 or so lbs more than a craptor or a z400, but if there stock and yours is too then you will have no problem keeping up or outrunning the other two. As far as changes, the only thing I know of is the 200 cdi and one from a baja will not work, the baja has a different plug than a standard model. hope this helps.

Differnt
swingarm is 1.25 shorter
headlight is plastic
Oilfilter is longer
better tires so ive read mine didnt last to long
higher rev limit
some of the 04s had allum a-arms
Oil lines are different also makes for easier oil changes

There has been some good advancements over the years. Namely in 2002 when the baja came out. And then again in 2004. All pre 2002 have the old style rev box, which I believe was at 7700 rpms. They also had the old style shift forks that are said to bend easy. In 01' they went a longer oil filter. In 02 they bumped up the rev box to 7900, added the new shift forks. In 04 they made alot of small changes. Interior motor parts are lighter. The a-arms on the early ones were aluminum. Shorter aluminum swingarm. Better and lighter headlight. Narrower stance. Shorter stance. Different color frame. They also added the x package in 04 that gave you the much better shocks, tach, baja lights, aluminum bumpers, nerf bars, skid plates, hand gaurds, and cool graphics. The shocks on these kick butt over the stockers. The 05's and 06's are identical, even colors. They stopped making the standard model in 06'. Oh and in I think 02, they added a oil bleed line, making in so you didnt have to bleed the oil system after a roll over and oil change. It still sucks to change the oil. Heck I think thats it, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Sure hope that helps. Jed.

Also, as far as weight. They weigh alot more than a z400. Around a hundred pounds. I think they are around 50lbs more than the old raptor, and 80 more than the new one. Stock it will outrun all other stock machines on flat long runs. Up the hill is a different story. Stocks sucks thats why they invented a thing called mods!
