From thrashing on my fathers old DS, I can tell you they are as tough as Hondas....that is a HUGE statement. In fact, Im pretty sure the only other quad as dominant in the Baja and other long distance desert races other than the Honda 450R was the Bomb DS650.

Don't know about Jap ATV's but, I got hit by a Sand Rail while riding on my DS. . . he hit the left rear tire and sent me and the bike flying. I was out cold for a while. . .
Damage to the DS - Bent Rim and beads came loose of the rear tire and one of the front tires (for some reason, I can't remember which one).
Damage to the Rail - Busted A-Arms and don't remember if his tires were messed up too.
So, I'ld say the DS is more tuff than a Sand Rail

right on blackhawk, ive had japs utility atv's from the start and they were good but in the past few years ive been looking at the outlander and the reviews,books,mags,etc... have been awsome. also a biggy for me was the fact that the outty 800 will hands down take out and stock atv in its class. its like anything else there is some things i like better on my jap quads and some i like better on my outty but overall the outty is the winner.

I believe they are all made in Canada right now. The easy way to tell where any vehicle was made is the VIN - 1 = USA, 2 = Canada, 3 = Mexico, J = Japan, there are some other number but I don't know exactly what they correspond to. I think there is a 4 that is also in USA but I don't have enough information to say for sure. Any Bombardier I've seen had a 2 as the first number in the VIN however.
