DS air filter replacement?

DS air filter replacement?
Hi guys,
The previous owner of my DS apparently took off the filter cover on my stock filter, is it ok to run these bikes without the "sock" on them? How do you clean the stock paper type filter? What is a good replacement filter? I run K&N on my Street bike, and truck, but not sure how they work in real dusty situations? Thanks in advance, you guys rock!
