Maxxis Bighorn - Which is the right size for Outlander 800 ?
Hi
I'm a really bit confused about the right size for the Maxxis!!!
My Bomb dealer (he is also a top atv racer) advised me to buy AT25x8R12 & AT25X10R12, his point of view is the following:
- The Maxxis Bighorn size is not standard so the 25 is equal to the 26 Carlisle ACT radial stock tires
- Using the Maxxis AT26x9R12 & AT26X12R12 will decrease the performance of the 800 in terms of speed and trail usage.
I’m not totally convinced, but bought the 25. I want to now your opinion is the dealer correct?
I usage is the following:
- Forest roads – high speed driving
- Trail usage – technical low speed driving
- Usually no mud driving
Thanks in advance for your cooperation,
MP

im am not a atv racer...so i will speak just in what i think...which may mean nothing
i would stay with 26, it came with them and to go smaller and ride trials seems backwards, if anything go up..i am not familiar with the bighorn but size is size..i would guess or it woudnt be a size..follow that...LOL...you will only lose some top speed if anything cause of the wieght issue..

I bought 25inch Maxxis Bighorns originally for my BF750. When I got the Outlander 800, I swapped them around so that the Outty has the Bighorns. I measured both sets and the are basically the same size, like within 1/4 inch maybe.. So I would have to agree with what the dealer said. I think those huge lugs on the Maxxis make up the difference.

The maxis with the big lugs at the outer limits of the tire will be harder to turn than the 26" carlisle acts because there is not as much weight to spin out there (smaller lugs at about the same radius from the axle centerline). The maxis will result in less performance (slower).
If you don't mind that, they are good tires as far as I know. I have 850 miles on my carlisles and don't see much wear on them if that is a factor for you.

Hi
After +/- 100 miles with the Maxxis bighorn 25, I have the following conclusions:
- More traction than the ATC's, in trail ride (tested in a mountain climb that often had to engage Low gear with ACT, and with Maxxis no need)
- Top speed achieved in forest road - 76 mph, more 5 mph than with ACT's.
So I'm convinced that this is a good choice, the only thing that I lose with 25's is the look that 26" gives to O800
Tnaks for your posts.

Is the speedometer a little fast with the 25 inchers? I can get 76 with the stock tires down hill. Which is better, bias or radial in the bighorns? I am thinking about getting a set. Was going to get mudlight radials but I think the bighorn will probably be better for road riding.

Dear Mr. Paiva,
I agree with your dealer. The 25" Bighorn should work better for your machine than the 26" sizes.
