Sand Skate II Sizing

When I bought my DS it came with a set of STU Sand Skate II 20x11x10. From reading the forums I know 22" tires are the way to go with the DS. I know tire diameter are not the same from brand to brand and was wondering how the 20" Sand Skate IIs compare to 22" tires like the ITP Sand Stars and the Skat Trak Edge in overall size.
Thanks,
Scott

Keep in mind this little tidbit:
The Sand Tires Unlimited Sizing is actually more true to the numbers than seemingly all other manufacturers. When you buy Skat Traks, if you get a 20" tire, it is really about 18". When you buy Dune Trekkers, they are rated at 20" and you get a 16" tire. So yes, for most brands you need to go with 22" to get a decent amount of rubber contact with the sand. The Sand Skate IIs have enough contact and grip for play, and any "V" shaped tire should really be considered a play tire. So if you are interested in play riding not competition I'd stick with the Sand Skate IIs as they are a very good dune tire - the 20" you have there will be the same size (when actually measured) as most 22" tires you can buy. That being said you CAN run tires that are truly 22" and be OK, (I have STU Sand Skate Is which are a true 21" tire, that would be like running 23" Skat Traks.) If you need more traction and want to do a little more drag racing, look into Extreme Haulers 8 paddle, 22" and also STU Padla Brats, both the 9 paddle competition cut and the 18 paddle stagger competition cut. The Skat Traks will be much less cost than the STUs, but most people would say that the STUs will perform that amount better as well.

Thanks BlackHawk,
I ended up getting Dragons Sand Stars in 22x11x10 as they are around an inch taller than my Sand Skate IIs and came with 10" wide wheels, my SS IIs are on a 9" wide wheel. The paddles are very similar in hight and width, but the wider wheel on the Sand Stars seem to flatten the paddles a little. I was pretty happy with the way the SS IIs were working but wanted more floatation and I hope this will be a good set up.

Cool. Can you measure them? I'd love to know if the Sand Stars are a true 22" tire or close to it. My STUs both measured true to size at the carcass. It is a shame that tire companies have such different ideas as to what 20" actually is. It seems to me, if you buy a 20" tire it should measure 20" top to bottom as the machine would sit on the specified surface (In this case, sand, where you ride on the carcass and the paddles are literally in the sand!)
I have heard good things about the Sand Stars as a play tire so it sounds as if you should be very happy with them.

BlackHawk,
All tires were inflated to 4psi
I averaged both pairs of tires
The 20x11x 10 Sand Skate IIs were 19.5 for the carcass and 21.25 tip of paddle to tip of paddle.
The 22x11x 10 Sand Stars were 21.5 for the carcass and 22.5 tip of paddle to tip of paddle.
The Sand Skates were much closer to their rated size, but still smaller.
I used a square to make sure the results were repeatable and acurate.
At least we know now for these two sizes

21.5" carcass size really lends proof as to why the Sand Stars do work so well on the DS. A tire that sits that tall seems like a very good option. Knowing it is actually that large means I'll strongly consider those tires when the Sand Skate IIs wear out on my 2001 DS.
Thanks for measuring the tires as well!
